Default 289 motor mount heat shield?

The 1966 Ford shop manual shows motor mounts in Section 8, Engine. The bottom portion of the standard 289 mount is not shown entirely accurately but the top looks correct. The picture and the text mention a separate 'Heat Shield-6C038' for the non-HiPo 289s which is pictured as a horizontal, flat plate between the engine block and the motor mount. None of the parts sellers offer such a shield and neither of my 66 Mustangs, one of which I have known since new, have had such a shield. I don't remember one on the handful of other 289 Fords I have owned either. Was such a shield ever used on a Mustang? If so, what were they made of?

The NPD catalog has them part# 6C038-1 @ $21.50/pr.. I did make some out of a piece of stainless sheet metal. Not very hard to make just a flat plate with holes drilled to mount between the engine mount and the block also has the corners cliped off. I'm all for shielding rubber parts. Good luck.

Thanks, I hadn't seen those. I'll take a look. Flat steel seems proper but I haven't seen any of the shields or a real need for them for that matter.

Now that I Google specially looking for heat shields I find several who sell them. Most say they are for 64-65 260/289s and therefore not for the '66 and later. I have owned five 66-67 289s, a couple from new, and have never seen these shields used.

It would appear they are for pre-66 engines which explains why my cars have never had them.

Dan,

Your profile would indicate that to be a California car and it was 22 years old when you bought it. Wouldn't that also have had the Thermactor air injection with much hotter exhaust manifolds compared to a non-CA car. Another reason to have heat shields.

All 5 of my 289s have been non-CA cars, I was the first to remove the engine from 3 of them; none had shields.
