Default what would be a good cam for a mild 289 build? 1966 Mustang

I have a stock 289 out of my 66 coupe, and Im not sure what would be a good cam to put in it. I'm not gonna be out racing it, but i still want it to be fun to drive. Any suggestions?

kind of depends. are you leaving everything else stock or changing out the intake manifold and exhaust? Edelbrock puts together good package deals. Also are you going to change the lifters, valve springs or rockers?

I used this cam
Lunati 61001LK - Lunati Voodoo Cam and Lifter Kits - summitracing.com

It has a decent idle, sounds good. Very responsive. Not sure what exactly your set up is but, I have a C4, 3:55 gears, had some work done on the heads and used roller rockers, and headers. This cam worked better with the C4 after I changed to a 2300 stall converter.

If you are just putting in a cam and nothing else into a stock 289 you will need to use a cam with duration @0.50 no more than 210 - 215 , this will give you your power band anywhere from idle to 5500 RPM. If you go with a cam with duration any higher than this then you loose low RPM power, and vacum becomes an issue .

Don't be fooled by big number cams , a cam is the heart any engine but only as good as the parts that accompany it. For a stock engine you would not want to go any more than about 2 grinds more than stock, Edelbrocks performer plus series work nicely.

Try the CompCams free download program. You enter all your variables and it give you cams designed for you engine and driving. You can use that info. to pick a cam from whatever manuf. you like.
