Question Oil rings in 351W

Hi all you Mustang guys

Im trying to rebuild a 351W for my 69 Fastback. It was recently imported to denmark from the US.
The engine had never (in my possesion) run very good, so i started to disassamble the engine to find the mistake. First of all, theres a comp. cam cam for a 302 ! inside..that cant be right.
Secound, the camshaft coud not be turned by hand. Needed a lot of force to turn it. I thourght it was the main bearings, but there all good. It turned out that it was the oil rings on the pinstons. The compression ring are good, has the right clearrence etc.
One pinston can bearly be pushed by hand inside the cylinder, and i dont think thats right. The bore is still 4 inch as oirg.
When i only have the compression rings on the pinston, it moves fairly, but when the oil rings gets on, not faily.
Its like that its oilrings for 4.020 bores or something like it.
I have looked at summit racing, california mustang etc to find oil rings smaller than mine, but its like you have to buy a compleete set of pinstons ....can any of you guys help me ?

Best regrads

Welcome to the site. I know that ebay sells the whole set for about $30.00s and Jegs usually carrys the total seals for about the same.

I would suggest getting a file fit set of rings, bypass the predetermined sizes. That way you can tailor them to the size you need. All ring manufacturers have file fit sizes.

Hi Eagle...
Do you mean that i should get a set of rings for 4" bore or do you mean that i shoud file the expander part of the oil-ring to make it fit ? I have never seen a file fit set, and not quite sure what you mean by that..??
Thanks for reply..

you will have to get .005 oversize and file the endgap to specs. but the oil rings do not file. oil rings on a piston will make alot of drag, they are supposed to. thats how they control the oil.

the cam should take some force to turn it. and a 302 cam in 351w is o.k. just use 302 firing order.
