The 1967 Shelby GT500 came with a reworked 428 cubic inch "Police Interceptor" V8 engine. The 428 was otherwise reserved for bigger Ford models, where it made 345-bhp. Shelby added the cast-aluminum medium-riser manifold from Ford's 427, dual 600-cfm Holley carbs and other tweaks for a conservative rating of 355-bhp.
The GT500E "Eleanor" is not a true Shelby. A 1967 fastback Mustang was modified into a half-Shelby/half-custom for the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds" and called Eleanor. Almost all of the Eleanors you see now are recreations of the movie vehicle, made from non-Shelby 1967 and 1968 Mustang fastbacks and are powered by a wide range of engines, including modern Ford crate engines.
