Default 1966 Rally Pac Questions

What was the original like for a 1966 A code

did it go to 6000 rpm or 8000 rpm on a v8?
did it say "ford" or 'mustang" on the face of the tach?
did K code tach go to 8000 rpm and all other codes to 6000?
are rally pacs for 1966 smaller and a different shape then ones used for 1965?
did the originals light up in blue/green?

what is the best aftermarket rally pac out there?
does it light up in blue/green like the instrument panel?

Thanks Scott

Hello. That's a lot of questions. The only cars that got the 8000 rpm tachs were the K codes. The tachs for the 6 cyl cars were different internally from the tachs used for non-K code V8s, but they were all 6000 rpms. They say Mustang across the top and rpmx100 across the bottom. I seem to recall that are basically white lights, but I'm not sure about that one. The 65 rally pacs are different from the 66s. Hope that helps.

There are two styles of early Rally Pacs. The earlier ones say Mustang at the top but the later ones say Ford at the bottom. The change may have been in 66?? They use standard bulbs (of an uncommon number) but there is a (blue) plastic filter built in that makes the light look green to match the other Ford instruments of that time. The clock and the tach have to use different numbered bulbs (per the book) or they don't appear to have the same brightness dials.

Repro? I haven't a clue except they are not wired into the car the same as an original one.

Hi again. As far as I know there is only one company reproducing them, but they are available through a number of retailers, so, it doesn't really matter who you buy it from, it's the same people that made it.

Here are some facts on Rally Pacs I found on the web some time back. Hope this is helpful.

Seems like a decent reference although I can't judge how accurate it might be. I do know that the light bulb used in the low profile, '66 clock is NOT an 1895 as stated - it should be an 1816. 1895 is a globular G-4 1/2 (round), 2 candlepower bulb similar to a #53. The 1895 is used in the tach, glove box and 7 of them as instrument panel bulbs. It will make the clock look dark. The 1816 is a tubular T-3 1/4 bulb (cylindrical), 3 candlepower bulb listed in the shop manual as proper and it makes the clock look the same brightness as the tach. The 1816 is also used in the console. Parts houses such a Virginia Mustang sell the proper bulbs although your local parts-R-us may not. My car came with #53s (incorrectly) in everything since they are easier to find at parts-R-us.

The only low profile face shown is an 8k one in the last page of photos, towards the bottom, with 'Ford' on the face. (The faint green glow is shown accurately in the picture just to the left of the low profile unit.) That low profile is exactly like mine which has an internal date of Sep 15, 1966, which almost surely makes it a dealer supplied item since the car was built 2 months before then. It is that model for which I know the bulbs should be different.
