Default Autolite Battery Top

Has anyone bought the Autolite battery top cover to look like the original Autolite battery? My maintenance free battery is not flat. It has the slightly raised rectangular vent caps. Will the battery top cover work on this type of battery? I do not want to buy one and have it not work. My battery is a lifetime battery I originally purchased from Autozone in the late 70's. As long as I keep the car and receipts, they keep replacing the battery at no cost. Remember them? So buying a new battery is not an option for now.

My friend Darren (dburns) has one on his 69. We tried putting it on mine to see how it would look, but like yours, mine has the retangular vent caps, and it didn't work. His has the rectangular caps also, but they are recessed into the top of the battery so it fits. Hope this helps.

Hello. The top of the battery has to be flat for it to work. It also has to be a reverse post battery. If it isn't, the positive mark on the battery top will be the negative post of the battery. Here's what it looks like. I know. My battery is in backwards. I always do that so that the positive terminal isn't right up against the inner fender.

Veronica, if you aren't totally paranoid about year correct originality you could put what the 66's got on. My 66 and all the others have a rubber pad that clips onto the inner fender so the positive terminal doesn't touch.

And I am confused about 2 things, what do you mean your battery is in backwards? I thought the Mustangs were supposed to have the terminals towards the back. Also, on the battery cover, is the positive mark on the side that goes by the inner fender, or is it on the side closer to the engine?

Hi again. To put the little rubber thing on the inner fender I would have to poke a couple of holes in the car. I'm not going to do that, especially when I can avoid it by having a battery with the posts reversed from how they are supposed to be on the 'correct' battery.
And yes, the terminals are supposed to be to the back like you thought. With the correct battery, that puts the positive over next to the inner fender. If you look at the battery top on my car, the post that has the negative cable says + and the one with the positive cable says - .
