Default Speedometer replacement and legallity

I'm going to be installing a new instrument cluster this off season. I'm installing the bezel offered by Year One, and filling it with Autometer Ultra Lite gauges. I'll be installing a new speedometer/odometer and i'm concerned about the legal ramifications. In Mass. when you get your vehicle inspected they document the current mileage. Well mine is now going to be at 1.7, the bench test mileage that came on the speedometer. Does anyone know of what must be done to make sure I stay legal?

Hello. I don't know about Mass. but, most states don't pay any attention at all to the odometer reading of a car that's several decades old. Just write in 'A lot' and that should satisfy them.

I heard somewhere there is a place you can send your new speedometer to and they will legally adjust it to match the mileage on your old odometer.

LoL wish I could just say "Alot" but they actually document it on the inspection certificate. The inspector reads it for him/herself off the odometer, then enters it into the computer. Well, I'll ask the garage I use. I use the same guy for all my inspections, maybe he'll help me out.

Older cars they can't keep track of the mileage since it can roll over.Could be 78k 178k or 278k you get the point that's the main reason.

Every form I have ever seen has an option of: UNKNOWN

That is your correct answer. You can explain it all to the new owner who may, or may not care. The forms guy doesn't care at all as long as you answer; its a federal law. Any time it turns over 100k miles the answer is the same: UNKNOWN. Even if you know it has gone over 4 and not 5 times, the number presented is WRONG = UNKNOWN.
