Default The 1966 Mustang project for my Wife!

Just bought a 66 Mustang Coupe with a 289 for my wife last week. Body is in great shape with solid floors!

Here is a list of things that was already done to the car when purchased

1. New wheels and tires
2. Fiberglass GT hood
3. Front brakes converted to Disc
4. New suspension( shocks, springs, leaf springs, control arms, tie rods etc.)
5. Pertonix coil and ignitor
6. rear seat new upolstery
7. Tail lights converted to LED

I think there is more but this is all I can remember for now.

Here is a list of parts that are brand new and not put on the car yet when purchased.

1. New front seat upolstery
2. New sound deadening matting for under the carpet
3. New pre molded carpet
4. New instrament bezel
5. New tail light and exhaust bezels
6. New door handles
7. New mirrors
8. New door panels w/arm rests
9. New windshield and rear window seals
10. New headliner
11. New back up and turn signal lights
12. Found a Edelbrock performer 289 manifold in the trunk w/ a shop manual (this is going on the new motor)
13. New window crank handles
14. New hood seal
15. New emblems

I think there is more to this list also but can't recall everything

Here is what I'm having done right now

1. New 302 roller motor beeing built to replace the old wore out 289 but using the old 289 heads on the new motor and having a new carb put on it
2. Having the C4 completely rebuilt

Here is what I just ordered or bought for the car already (sure there will be more to come, LOL)

1. JBA full exhaust sytem (headers, H-pipe, rear section all the way out)(had to cut out the old pieced together system that was U-bolted together so tight that it locked everything together)
2. Kick down cable (old one was broken)
3. Neutral safety switch (old ones wiring was chewed up)
4. Engine to firewall ground wire (old one was frayed and rusted)
5. New water pump for new motor (not going to put a old water pump on a new motor)
6. Valve cover gaskets
7. New tranny dipstick tube and dipstick (old dipstick was broke right at the top of the tube)
8. New heavy duty motor mounts (old ones were dry rotted)
9. New oil pressure sending unit (not sure if the old one worked so replacing it anyways)
10. New stainless steel trans cooler lines (old ones are not leaking but beat up so throwing in some new ones)
11. New radiator hose kit ( self explanitory)

Future plans for some of our Income Tax Return money

1. Complete A/C Kit from Vintage Air (It gets super hot here in Phoenix and this is going to be the wifes daily driver so she needs A/C for her and our 9 month old daughter when she is driving her around too!)(we were going ot get the A/C kit now but after having to get the exhaust system we are short for the A/C kit, so we are getting it after Income Tax Return now)

**Update**
Took the whole interior out this weekend! More money to be spent! LOL, took the seat covers off the original seats and found that they need some TLC! I have the new upolstery for them but I need 2 new seat rails for both and seat buns plus the cost of paying someone to do the work on them. So I decided to just buy new seats from Mustangs Plus, I will end up spending more on new seats but they will be a lot more comfortable. Going with these seats!http://mustangsplus.com/xcart/produc...at=2233&page=1! I also need to order new insulation foor the floor, firewall and seat divider to go with the carpet and sound deadening mat that I already have. So I am starting to come up with stuff that I won't need and would like to sell.

1. Original 289 block with rotating assembly still together including the oil pump and timing chain.
2. 4 barrell carb that came with the car (I'm going with a Edelbrock 625)
3. Original seats
4. Original intake manifold
5. Original hood
6. New 2 tone Blue bucket seat upolstery

Anyone who wants this stuff or knows anyone that needs it let me know!

Welcome to AFM, sounds like you got yourself a pretty good deal. I love my 66, and you're one up on me in the weather dept. out there in AZ. Mine is up for the winter, every time I go into the garage I tell her to hang in there, spring is around the corner.

Can't wait to see some pics.

Thanks!

It is nice to be able to drive the car all year round here. Actually once the car is put back together & a few other things like fixing the doors so they lock and stuff get fixed then the car will be the wife's every day driver.

Once we get word that picture attachments are working again I'll post some up for everyone

D*mn! That's an awesome price for a rust-free car!

When you go to upload a pic just make sure it's within the dimensions that allowed for upload. That might be your issue. I just uploaded a couple pics in another thread and it worked fine.

Holler if you need anything...

Looking good...

Is that Tahoe Turquoise as well? If it is it's inspiring me to finish ours.

It's hard to tell on my monitor.

Well I was going to do the new seat thing but I called MustangsPlus to see what type of Blue those seats were. They are GM Blue which won't even look close to the 2 tone Blue I have, so I found a place called "Bell Auto Upholstery" here in town and called them to find out how much it would cost to have this stuff done:

1. Fix the back seat frame showing through the new back seat upholstery problem by adding foam in that area
2. Put new front seat skins on
3. Make 2 new seat backs (mine are tore and busted up)

Got quote for $300. Seems a little steep, does this quote seem accurate or should I shop around more?

Hard to say. It doesn't sound high to me with the addition of the new seat backs. It still wouldn't hurt to shop around. I did my own upholstery (and won't ever again) so I saved labor and just bought my interior from TMI.

If it is indeed Turquoise on the outside you might consider going to the true Aqua interior like the stock ones came with back in the day. That's what our is and the contrasts are pretty striking.

LOL, the car is in awesome shape! I know hard to believe the price but remember I'm having a new motor built and had the tranny rebuilt. So I had to talk the price down to help cover the cost of these repairs.

By the way everyone, I need to mak a correction to my first post under the topic of "what was laready done on the car" item number 4 for says "New Suspension" it needs to say "Brand New Grab-A-Trak Super Starter Kit"

Serious? You only paid 3900? Either that guy needed money or I need to move to a different area next time I buy! Great looking car and glad you can enjoy it. How do you like that suspension?

LOL, haven't drove the car yet! When I bought it the tranny was slipping, but the people I bought it from were able to drive it to my place. I had them park it in the garage and never drove it.

I got it on a Wednesday and after work on Friday I started pulling the tranny and the parts off the motor I needed to give to my motor guy for the new motor. Gave him my non smog 289 heads for him to port and polish and convert to roller rocker heads for the new 302 roller motor along with my timming chain cover, oil pan, fuel pump & eccentric and a Edelbrock Perfomer intake manifold

The people we bought it from were friends of ours from base and they ended up getting orders overseas so we got it for a pretty good price.

I was kinda nervous about the buy at firs tbecause the wife and I already have 2 cars and until we get this car up and running and back on the road we are going to have 3 car payments. So I was hesitating to buy it for a minute but then I thought about the price and how much the wife wanted a 65 but a 66 is close enough and the fact that I would never probably run into a buy like this again. So I sucked it up and bought it! Took a loan out for $8,000 to cover the cost of the car, the motor, the tranny and other parts I knew I was going to have to buy once I started tearing into it. Finding out that $4,100 isn't quite enough to cover all the expenses that we have ran into or other things we have decided to buy but thank goodness for Income Tax Returns, LOL.

We aren't trying to make this into one of those Barrett Jackson super show cars, but a car that my wife can drive everyday and is still a good looker.
