The only vintage Ford forum I know of is just an email "group" that me and my dad are a part of for flathead v8's...
Those Fairlanes are beautiful when they are original! This is just me, but keep it as original as you can. What do you mean by "hot rod"?
We have a '57 that is our next project. We're either going to put in the original 312ci, and stroke the engine (because you tell it's stroked from the outside... ) or go with the 352 Y-block (which actually came in the '58 fairlanes).
Which engine does your '56 have in it already???

You can always dress it up some with wheels and paint, lower it a little bit if you don't want to modify.Go on Google(use image, blogs, and regular searches)and you will see a lot on there. On images, you will see all kinds and get ideas.I have a 1936 Dodge with small block Chevy way beyond stock.Have fun with it.

i'd like to upgrade the suspsion and powertrain... but i would like to keep it stock. it would be all ford parts like a 351w.. i have a 41 dodge 2 door. that again has numbers matching motor and trans.. my dad collected cars when he was my age. he has a dodge d100 with a slant six

That 41 must be kinda rare.My father had a new 41 Plymouth which you saw quite a few of.Your Ford will be nice with modern running gear. That is a good looking body style.

Most of us classic use the bolt on rule and keep any parts we take off just in case we change our minds. The interior you can do up to your taste leave the body stock looking bigger rims coil overs etc etc your wallet is your only limit.
I would agree with Andrew. What ever you change don't butcher it. One of my four speeds came from a guy that still has his 56. It's nice all original looking but with a 500 horse 427 8v, toploader (small input too which I found interesting, they hold some power) and a 9 inch. He said ten inch slicks fit in the stock fenderwells. Beautiful car. Ultimately it's up to you. Best of luck.

I say keep the exterior and interior looking stock. Some good looking wheels and good tires will look good.
You could upgrade the suspension a little. I don't think it would look good lowered. Maybe if you lowered it VERY little just due to whatever suspension you use.
As for the engine, you would't have to keep the stock engine. You could stick with that generation of engines and choose a 352 or 390 Y-block and a C4 or C6 transmission!!
But the exterior and interior and so stylish on those 50's era cars. So leave those stock and play with the engine and suspension!

Well dressed stock is the way to go on that car. A well dressed stock will bring a lots better price when you get ready to sell. I see some bringing some really big bucks. Then of course it is your car and your money, go for what ever trips your trigger.
I'm slightly behind the times but a 352 or 390 sure was NOT Y-Block!!!!
