Default 1966 mustang coupe, sitting for 20 years. Where to start?

I just bought my wife her dream car. The only problem is that it has been sitting for the passt 20 years. Any advice on where to get started? I just had the carb rebuilt. The motor seems to run fine. It definatelly needs new brakes. When I had it runnung the transmission acted real funny. I had to rev the motor way up before it would move and then it just jumped and killed the motor any ideas? Thank you.

Cool 66 trans question

This may sould very basic, but check the fluid level. Do this with the engine runnig. They used to say in neutral. Not sure if that is procedure or not.

Once you assure you have the proper fluid level, cycle the trans through all gear positions (engine running) keeping it in each for at least 30 seconds to fill all of the passages in the valve body.

If that does not do it, check the vacuum dashpot that is on the side of the trans. Verify that the vacuum hose is in good condition. Replace if not. As a last resort, replace the dashpot.

Hope this helps

It definitely sounds like low tranny fluid to me.

As far as where to get started, I say fix the mechanical stuff first. Make sure that it is road worthy. That way you can cruise around in it a bit while you finish up the cosmetic bits.

I would change all fluids first. Fresh oil, trans, coolent and filters. Make sure everything it tight and then see check status.

what is the easiest way to get the undercoating off? I need to get 2 bolts behind the headlight bucket so i can get the fender off. It looks like they were put on backwards. Thanks for all the help. Wife changed her mind and now wants to tear the car apart starting eith the front end and rebuild as she goes.

Something that dissolves tar but won't kill you with vapours.

Fresh Gasoline works

first change the engine oil w\ detergent oil and oil filter. run car 500 miles change engine oil and filter again. Change the trans. fluid and filter. change the heater hoses and radiator hoses while draining old antifreeze. flush the coolong system and replace antifreeze.change the plugs and points.Replace the fan belts. If the car has really sat for 20 years these items would be the first on my list,The trans, seals and engine rear mainseal gaskets usually begin to leak along with the typical valve cover if left sitting for many years.
