Default T5 Donor Cars for a 1966 Mustang

I'm thinking of about doing the T5 conversion for my '66 and was wondering what kind of cars I could look for to get the appropriate transmission from? I did the aod conversion and its ok, but I think it would just be better to do the T5 conversion.

It really depends on what motor and rear end you have. And what gear ratios you want. how much HP are you running? Do you want a gas saving street car or a drag machine?

Great links I used when doing my T5 conversion. They will answer most of your questions and explain the different options you must decide on:
T5 Swap, T5 Conversion, Mustang T5 Swap, Auto to Manual Transmission -FordMuscle.com
Modern Driveline - Full T5 Conversions for Mustangs and Cougars 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973
TMS How To - Mustang Five-Speed Conversion / T-5 Swap
Clutch
T5 Transmission Rebuild - G-Force T5 - Modern Driveline - FordMuscle.com
http://www.sccoa.com/faq/speedgr.html
5 Speed Conversions

All the T5 trannys look the same. They have a tag on them and the number can be referenced to this chart for its rating. You will want to look for one with a high torque rating (300 or better) to handle the 351. The World Class is the correct one. It also uses automatic transmission fluid. A good check is to also open the drain plug and make sure it had ATF in it. If it is 80 weight gear lube, they are trying to sell you a NON World class T5. WALK AWAY QUICKLY
FORDMUSCLE.com webmagazine - T5 Swap for Early Fords!

Your auto drive shaft yoke WILL fit the T5. The drive shaft will probably need to be shortened some to have ONE INCH OF FREE PLAY. Too little and you can wreck your tranny or break the U joint and too much will cause vibration. Shorten/balance and rebuild cost $150.

Consider using a T5 bellhousing and the flywheel WITH THE CORRECT IMBALANCE so you can use a 10 1/2 inch clutch

All this should keep you busy for 30 minutes or so...

Ok I hogged this thread too much.

Well I have an aod in my stang and when I did the conversion to the aod, I had to shorten my driveshaft and had to use a different drive shaft yoke(I went from a small block C-6 to an AOD). So would I still have to shorten the drive shaft again?

You really need to measure. It seems each car is different, and when you have everything bolted up you will be able to tell.
The auto driveshaft I had slid right into the T5. Try fitting it before buying the T5 yoke, you may not need it.

The T5 mount is about 1 inch farther towards the back.
I read of a person who had fabricated and modified his old crossmember to work but it took him awhile to do it. He said he would have bought a new crossmember if he had it to do over again.

So you're saying that the t5 mount is an inch further away compared to the aod?

My cross member moved the point back about 1 inch IIRC for the transmission mount.

The t5 cross member also came with a bracket to relocate the emergency brake arm.
