I am baffled by the '5' and also the ME in the second line. Were 1965 rear ends occasionally put into 1966 Mustangs?

Thanks Andrewmp6. I am still trying to figure out the '5' and the 'ME' on the rear end tag. It appears to me that it is a 1965 rear end and I am scratching my head trying to figure out how it got into a 1966 Mustang convertible built in June 1966.

Anyone out there have a '5' and 'ME' on their 1966 Mustang rear end?

1966 cars were being built in August/September 1965.

Rear was cast
5 = 1965
M= December
E= 5th week

Check a 1965 calendar for a working day in the 5th week of Dec 27th -31st

It was normal for months of difference to by between casting and assembly.

I am a little surprised to learn that the rear end was built (cast) in late December 1965 and the Stang not assembled until the 3rd week in June 1966.

They could have been working all of those days, namely,Dec 27 thru Dec 31st 1965

December 1965

Casted Parts can have a quick turn around or a long turn around.

A forklift driver stocking parts in a parts crib can do many things before a pallet of parts gets set up for line assembly.

Of course there is the possibility of back rear end and it was replaced by the dealership while it sat on the lot waiting to be sold.

All sorts of variables are possible.
