Question Found 1973 Mustang mach special

I have a '96 gt ....i found a '73 "mach special" with a 351 not running and missing a front tire (will be replced by current owner). body is straight no rust that i can see (though id like to get it on a lift) its been sitting in az for a couple years due to a divorce .......low miles but the motor is probably gonna have to get pulled and built anyways and its an auto ?

how much should i be paying? ...anyone know where i can find a place to run the vin?

Has anyone ever heard of a "Mach Special" ....supposedly they bought the stang and then got all the parts of a mach including a motor from the dealer

in your opinion is it a good find should i jump on it ... thx

What's special about it? New one on me but there's Twister specials and so on.

Not sure whats so special, thats just what its listed as haha and i went to go see it and he dropped me the story about dealer swap. I'm very knowledgable about '79 and up stangs but classic im not as up to speed ......are they hard to find parts for....interior and exterior wise it has dry-rot problems as will the arizona sun will do

Well there's not alot of sheet metal pieces available. Dash pads and seating is available. Mostly make sure everything is there. Missing parts can be a pain to find. What do they want for it? 2bbl or 4bbl?

I've never heard of a "mach special". $3,900 sounds like a decent price for a running mach1. $5,000 is about right for a "twenty footer". Take a look at the VIN. It should look like this...
3*05*******
The 3 will mean that it is a 73 model. The 05 is the code for a mach1. If there is a 2 instead of a 5, than it's just a fastback. The letter after the 5 will tell you what motor came in the car.
F=302 2v H=351 2v L=250 1v Q=351 4v As far as after market parts, you can get just about the entire car. The only parts that I haven't found readily available are the sheet medal from the bottom of the windows up, the urethane front bumper, inner cowl (which is a big rust spot for these cars), and misc trim pieces.

What it sounds like is maybe it has the running gear from a Mach. Ford made Mustangs with the Mach 1 running gear that weren't Mach 1s. Here in Illinois a fastback/sportsroof without rust and mostly complete would draw that price pretty quick. Like run to the bank quick Running or not. Somethings I would look at that would add to the value: It's got the 4bbl engine windsor or cleveland( 73 had low compression D3 code /71 high- D1code). Any signs the motor has been rebuilt. Does it have disc brakes/power items? A/C? Does it have a 9 inch rearend? 4-spd or auto ( If it's a 4-speed I'd go for it) Just some stuff I look for.
