Default Started the resto of my 1972 Mustang Coupe

Well I've finally gotten motivated to get started on my 72 coupe. Started by removing all of the interior to see what all needed to be replaced sheet metal wise. So far it needs floor pans, and some work under the rear seat area. The firewall is solid and it needs a bit of work on the passenger side of the cowl.

Next I removed the fenders, grille, headlight buckets and hood. Removed the rad and everything that was bolted to the fender aprons.
Last night I got the engine out and on the stand. Next step is to pull the tranny out and take her down to work on the trailer and steam clean everything under the hood and the fender aprons to get all the gunk off. Then its going to get sand blasted from doors forwards then I'll start replacing sheet metal under the hood. Looks like i'll be needed the fender aprons and a bit of work around the drivers side shock tower.

The car had a fiberglass passenger side fender which will be getting replaced with a steel fender. It needs a new hood as the original is too far gone to bother fixing. Then its onto the lower quraters, trunk drop downs and trunk floor.

Heres the pictures so far:

look at the brace he made that goes in the shock tower http://home.flash.net/~sanco/mustang.htm it fills in the cup that holes water and braces the towers.

Learned something new again. I never heard of the Granada a-arms being used. Cool

Hmm I'll definitely be making some of those braces up and welding them in when I've got the suspension all apart. Thanks for the link.

Most shock tower repair/reinforcement kits have something close to that brace but it don't fully cover the cup and its not as thick. They don't make one for the 71-73 but you could make your own.If your going to make a lot of power or want great handling i would go for it.If you need anymore ideas or help with finding parts let me know.

Do you see any problems with me cutting out the cowl vent and just welding in some sheet metal? I don't really care for the cable operated floor vents. I realize the blower motor pulls air from the passenger side vent, but what would the big deal be if it just drew air from the inside of the car? The car isn't going to be driven during the cold months anyway. I would just build a grille cover for the blower fan.

Most aftermarket heat and ac units suck from inside not the cowl.Try these people 71-73 Mustang-Cougar Air Conditioning System | 71-73 Ford Mustang Mercury Cougar AC ask if there kit sucks from the cowl or not if they say no then go for it.

I don't want to put AC into my car, plus right now that $1500 would be better spent on sheet metal.

Yeah you could weld the cowl shut and rig up some kinda ducting to the blower to suck air from the inside like most newer cars do.Your wallet is the only limit of what you can do to these cars.

Thought I would post up pictures of the progress I have made. The front and rear floor pans are in. I had to use rear floor pan extensions from a 68 as there are none available for the the 72 that I could find. They were pretty close but not perfect. Got the floor primed and seam sealed and the passenger side cowl vent patched and seam sealed. Started removing the rust scale from the firewall and prepping everything for a coat of POR15. Still have to patch in the drivers side cowl vent.

Next step is to replace the inner fender aprons as they are pretty thin around the hood hinges and the battery tray area. Then its on to the trunk floor pan, drop downs and lower quarter panels.

Default looks familiar

Hi! Looks familiar~ my '67 coupe looked to be in about the same shape as your '72! You have a nice shop to work in, and noteworthy equipment makes working so much easier(less headache using cheap equipment)
I welded in the braces as mentioned earliers and welded the inner portions on the shock towers as well.
My gosh you work quickly! Looking good!
