Default Rear Ends 64 stang

Hey guys I'm looking to swap out my 8 inch for a 9. I got a 1964 mustang and i want to pick the housing up from a junk yard and swap out the gear later.

Off what year and model car is the best rear end to get? I really don't want to do fab work to make it work just looking for a bolt on.

Also What is the HP/Tq rating on a 9 inch

A stock 9 inch about 350 400hp is the breaking limit. The Granada/Monarch/Versailles has a 9 inch its a tiny bit too wide so your back wheels will stick out a little or have custom back spacing wheels made. The only real downside is the gear ratios those cars came with ain't the best. But a aftermarket housing would be better and they are built stronger.

lol trust me man id love one of those. But im just looking for something cheap and temperary right now. Later on i plan to weld in a new rear sub frame and buy a shorty rear end and put slicks on. But a 9 inch junk yard rear end of another ford would do fine for a while with some new gears in it.

Good luck finding a 52 1/4" 9" Mustang housing at the wreckers

If a Mustang guy didn't get it sure enough a Hot Rodder got it.

Fairlanes are the same

dude seriously, ur more likely to find a topless model in the junkyard than a 9 " rear thatll just bolt in with the right width. u should do what i did, i just bought some 3.80 richmond gears, and a lock right positive locking dif, and put it in my 8", it launches hard, and it wasnt all that expensive. i mean unless ur going to be pushing over 400 horses at the wheal, why would u want to buy a 9 inch rear end? to way down the rear end of ur mustang?

Yeah everyone uses a 9 inch drag racers off roaders hot rod builders.Only ones i ever see in the junkyards are truck and bronco ones which are way to wide and wrong bolt patern for the lugs.

like the fonz said, 8" is fine. i used one in my tubed 81 chevy p/u, with healthy 350/th350 and 19-33 m/ts. no problems.

Id love to stay with my 8 inch but after turning my 302 to a 331 with the right combo of heads, cam etc im guessing ill have 400hp and 400tq+
since the junk yard option isnt going to work im looking at the currie rear ends.
Anyone know what there 31 spline with 9plus sports gear case can handle ?
Also if anyone knows can they be shorted at a later date? and by how much ?

the spline don't matter as much the diff and 3rd member casting will fail first. for 400lbs of torque you might want to talk to a rear end building see what it will need. Its cheaper to shorten it when its ordered then doing it later on.
