Question 66 Engine Compartment Detailing

I have whole engine compartment taken apart and wanted to start the detailing process this weekend.

What spray paint cans (colors) do I need?

I wanted to paint the compartment walls, p/s pump and whatever else needs fresh coat of paint (I have a new water pump and radiator going in).

I read somewhere that correct paint for engine block and intake manifold is "Ford Corporate Dark Blue" and that compartment walls etc. is Semi-Flat Black?

Anyways, would love to get paints from local shops... if I can't I would like to order them online today.

Any help and additional tips are greatly appreciated!

thx!

that sounds about right, just go to auto zone, they have the paint there, they even have thermal paint for engine blocks. a bit pricey, but eh. u can get the semi flat black at walmart, really cheap there. but really its up to u what color u want to go with, i painted my block with a thermal black, and my engine bay semi gloss black. i think thats what u meant semi gloss.

if your going with SD, you can get the correct paints at NPD. However I believe the engine blue is Medium. Some folks like the Satin Black for the fender and firewalls. I think you are correct on the flat being original.

Cool, thx... I found a few OG paint colors on NPD catalog. My engine is currently Ford Corporate Dark Blue so i might take that route.

Thanks!

You could visit How to Paint Your Engine and Choose the Correct Color in order to give you an idea of the kind of things to think about when detailing your engine bay. Enjoy.

I would go with a semi gloss or gloss black. The only reason I say that is for maintenance reasons. It cleans up a lot easier than flat black. Take it from me. I am very picky about my engine compartment. I spayed mine when I put the motor in back in 1998 and it still looks good if I say so myself.

I painted my engine, but I still need to paint the walls. I painted the engine Duplicolor engine enamel. I belive it was Ford Dark Blue, or Old Ford Blue. Just be careful if you use Duplicolor. The 2 I have listed are dark blue, but they have one that is the light blue they used on the 64.5 260 V8 valve covers and air cleaner.

I'm with you... easier to clean and maintain if I use gloss paint. I'll try a few and see what looks closest to OG but still glossy enough to clean up pretty good.

By the way, your ride looks cool! I hope to have my engine compartment looking as good as yours soon!

thx

Got it... I have a 4v intake manifold (and OG 1966 4v carb) from another 66 that was sprayed the lighter of the two ford blue's and it is much lighter than my block (would look weird if I just dropped it in like that). So, I will have to paint that dark ford blue also...

thx

For those of you who have the semi-flat or satin. Windex or any window washing fluid works pretty good on it. The new Harleys have that finish and I was told that's how to clean them. Just a tip
