i would take teh engine out. put it in a crate or on a stand. if you got teh room drain the fluids and set it aside.

then i would take out the interior

then id take off teh front suspention.
i am buying a part here a part there for mine when i get teh whole front done ill bolt it back up

do the same to the rear.

then start with body now that u can move it around. a door here a fender there so on so fourth

then send the body to paint
then finalise the suspention, id powdercoat subframes paint stuff get it all done

then id go back in and do my interior.

last but not least id rebuild the engine, then drop her in.

IMO

First I would read a lot of books and look up a lot of info. on the internet, on rebuilding and restoring and car. Then I would decide what kind of restoration I would want as an end result. ( Daily driver, Sunday driver, Show car, etc. Next would be to over look Your car and see what the over all condition is, and how much money and time it would take to accomplish what You want, and also are You capable of such a task. The things that You may not know how to handle, how much will it cost to get it done. This will give You a general idea whether You want to tackle such a project and about what it will cost. What ever You come up with, add about another couple thousand.

Whatever you decide the most important step is to take pictures of every step! You will want to see those progression pics!!
Oh and do share them! Will give inspiration to others!!

My first project was a '66 Coupe. In an act of over zealousness I decided to do a complete tear-down. Big mistake. I agree with most here that the first thing you should do is take out the motor and tranny. From there I would take care of the rust and body work and prep for paint. From there I would re-install the motor and tranny. You want to make sure you install the motor before you start aligning body panels. You don't want to spend all that time aligning panels, then install the motor and from the weight have to go back and adjust panels again and risk chipping the paint.

Most of all, get a good restoration book, a good parts distributor, I use Virginia Classic Mustang, be careful with every part, don't throw anything away unless it absolutely necessary, and label everything.

First I would go to the hardware store and buy an axe handle. Then I would go home and beat my dad to death for leaving his Mustang to rot for 20 years.

With the inheritance money I would pay to have it rebuilt by professionals - because if you have to ask where to start - you are far from ready to do a rebuild...................sorry, but true.
