Default 1965 Mustang 289- Restore tips?

Howdy Ya'll!

I just bought a 65 Mustang 289 from an old neighbor. It's in pretty good condition, engine still runs. Just needs some body work to repair rust and a new paint job. It also needs some interior work. Anyone have any tips or ideas to help this restoration go smoothly? I've always dreamed of owning a classic Mustang and I really want this to work out.

Thanks

Buy " How to Restore Your Mustang" and a shop manual for your car. These are the two best books to buy for your project.

Hello. If you are planning on doing a lot of the work yourself, asking specific questions here as you progress can also be helpful. I've never read that 'How to Restore Your Mustang' book, but, it certainly sounds like something that would be useful. The factory shop manual is an excellent book to have.

The books would be a good guide to get you through the restoration and you definatly want to ask questions on here if you have any problems. You can get the answer to just about every question here. One tip on the rust is make sure you get it all off. If the quarter panels are real bad you are better off to just replace them. My quarter panels have some holes rusted in them and i sandblasted them and got them all cleaned up primered and painted them and within a year the rust has come back through the paint. Also be patient, body work can take a lot of work but it is worth it in the end.

Take your time with all body work. The measure twice weld once is the only way to go when replacing patches or quarter panels. If you remove the hood, doors, trunk, or fenders drill pilot holes so that lining them back up is easy as pie. The books are great i have them both along with others.

Default How fast can you afford to go?

How much money are you willing to part with? How fast can you afford to go? There are few books to help you except for the repair manual may come in handy. You have to access your stang and set you goals and your budget. Don't buy things(parts) until you absolutely need them otherwise you'll start misplacing them! I'm just speaking from experience! I'm lucky to have plenty of money to blow, but still hurts when making stupid purchases!
Are you going bone stock?
Are you going to upgrade: rack n pinion, T5 tranny, ?
Are you going to paint the car yourself?(check prices to see how much a typical paint job will be)
HOw much time are you willing to dedicate? I think this is usually what kills a project(and funds)! These cars are time eaters but I love every minute I can be with my Mustang!

I wound never mean to discourage anyone! But be realistic and start pricing, labor, repairs, engine overhaul, tranny, brakes, interior, upholstery, etc.
cheers!
