Default C4 - Transmission

I have a 1967 Mustang 289 and C4 transmission. When driveing start hearing loud ticking or knocking sounds, sometimes sounds like someone knocking on the bell houseing. Any ideas

Thanks Jason

Some easy things to check, starter bolts tight, torque converter nuts tight. Harder to check, cracked flexplate. Does the knock happen at any particular time, like accelerating or decelerating?

My bet is that you are hearing spark knock. It often sounds like it is coming from the transmission area. Check your ignition timing.

Just replaced the starter. Started and warmed the car up. No prob. Drove it about 1.5 miles and it starts this knock. sounds like if you imagine the fly wheel or something spinning around with a loose piece that is striking something. got pretty loud till I got it home. Listened while it was in park. Less noise in park. then reversed it into its parking spot and noise stopped completly. Havent driven it since. My thought is torque converter, flywheel kinda thing maybe cuz it almost made that worn to the metal brake pad scrape sound, just hollower, like in the bell housing.

I dont think it is the engine. Seems to be ok there. there is a little ticking kinda sound I think from pass side area but cant pinpoint it down yet. Very probably exhaust leak as well.

Put the car on a lift or jack stands. Get you a 3 foot piece of hose. Put one end to your ear and move the other end around until you find out where the noise is the loudest.

Thanks for the idea Nigel! We bought the car a few months ago, because of weather, havent had a chance to put it up on blocks and check underneath at all yet. but I did just clean the garage and install new cabnets so it is car friendly now.

Did you get to drive it before the new starter? Did it make the noise? If unknown or no, try pulling the starter and see if it looks like the ring gear is hitting the starter gear. Sometimes, if you bought a rebuilt, they are not quite right.

It appears there is no inspection plate. Its missing. Checked the torque convertor bolts, one looks damaged, but seem tight. We are going to pull the transmission. Question, I want to do it right, should I attempt to rebuild the transmission myself and put a new or rebuilt torque convertor on it, or would it be wiser to have it rebuilt by a professional?

Jason,
Bring it down to me and I will build you a C4 that you will love!
My prices start at $750.
Actually when you get the transmission out look closely at the flex plate - When you said the noise went away in reverse it makes it sound like a cracked flex plate.Look at the plate around the crank bolts.
I will build you a transmission though - you are only 30 miles away!

Default transmission

Thanks for the info, I will keep your shop in mind. This weekend we replaced the filter and gasket, which stopped a good leak, and it seems to have fixed the problem! At least for now. But we may swing by and check out your shop here in the near future. thx everyone for the advice

My shop is closed down - I do this as a hobby now. I had an accident that really messed up my back and I don't do much of anything any more but I will still build the ocassional transmission.
I work out of my well equipped garage. If you are going to stop by - be sure to let me know when so I can be sure to be here - I have a lot of other things going on; non-profit educational business, not-for-profit teaching association, and my church/ministry.
