Smile My story "A slew of bad luck"

So in light of the past couple of days, it seems I have had one misfortune after another, and at this point since I'm in a better mood about it, I thought I'd post what happened.

This past Tuesday, I thought I'd finally work on my "I'll get around to it" list that never seems to get done. Well, my '03 mustang daily driver has an aftermarket alarm I installed two years ago that the siren died after about six months, and I've been meaning to fix it. Well, I torn the dash out again, pulled the wiring apart on the alarm, and discovered the battery backup unit was dead. Since the siren's ground wire went through it, it didn't work. So I gave it and the battery their own grounds instead of together, and viola! siren was fixed. While I was in there, I also cleaned up some of the remote start wiring with some better connectors to fix an intermitent problem I had been having every once in a while. It ran perfectly for an hour while I buttoned everything back up. Went to work the next day, ran perfectly.

Well, things took a turn for the worst. I went to leave for lunch, car started right up, backed out, and was driving out of the parking lot when I hear this crackling noise, car dies, and smoke comes out from behind the gauges.. The steering wheel's locked so I can't turn the wheel, so we pushed the car straight back to leave it out of the way in the parking lot. Everything still works, except now the car just won't start.

Now we fast forward to yesterday (Thursday). I leave work in my now borrowed car from my dad with the intention of going to my apartment, changing clothes, going to my garage to get tools, and head back to work to fix the car in the parking lot. I get home, lock my apt. door, drive around to my garage, hit the unlock button on my dad's car and proceed to get tools. I hear the car door close (wind blew it shut - it was really windy and gusty). No biggie. Go to open the door. It's locked. And where is the key? In the car, on the console where I left it. So the funny part about this whole thing is now I've got the '03 broken at work, my '65 project is sitting in the garage waiting to get finished so it doesn't work, and now my keys are locked in the car of my loaner. Great day, huh? Three cars in my posession, and they're all worthless to me.

You see, my dad's car is 12 years old so the switch doesn't always work the first time you hit it (he's told me this in the past), so when I thought it unlocked, it really didn't unlock all the other doors. Yay. He had offered me the spare key, but that would've been in my apt, and like I said I had already left and locked the door, and ALL my keys, including the apt key, were also locked in the car. And as if my day wasn't going downhill enough, even if I had the spare key, it was 6:20, my apt office closes at 6, so I couldn't have even been let in to my own apartment if I wanted to. So now I have no ride, and I'm locked out of my apt too. Awesome.

Well, the only good part about last night is because I *luckily* had opened my garage door to get tools (because the garage door opener and key were also locked in the car), I had a spool of wire in there that I was able to slide in the door crack, and, after an hour, was finally able to grab the lock knob and unlock the door. That was a huge pain, because it was made out of rubber, so every time I grabbed it, all it would do is bend over and my wire would pop off.

Needless to say, its been a great two days. Tonight I might go bury a key under a rock or something. Lesson learned: the key stays in my pocket, regardless of how short a time span I'm out of the car (walking back and forth loading tools in the car).

Have a great day everyone, and I hope you enjoyed reading "a slew of bad luck," a story based on my misfortunes.

Thanks for the entertainment value. This chapter basically covered what happened to you during this past week. How about another chapter on Monday filling us in on whatever bad luck you have this weekend?

LMAO....well I can tell you the prequel to the next chapter involves a fourth car and a tow strap...as long as I can get the steering wheel unlocked tonight...

Well, I'm sorry to say that chapter two isn't nearly as exciting. My dad came up with his expedition and a tow strap, I threw the stang in neutral, and off we went. Let me tell you how much fun that was - my "power" steering was now a manual steering car so it was a huge pain to even get it to turn without some momentum, and the window motors were on whatever circuit that didn't work anymore so I couldn't roll down the windows, and it was freakishly hot in the car because it'd been sitting in the sun until that afternoon.

Well, we got the stang on the road so now I'm at the mercy of this tow strap as I'm flying along on the road just flapping in the breeze. Better yet, I'm supposed to be the brake and I realized as we were flying along that since my car wasn't on, after a few pumps of the brake pedal, now I have a hard brake pedal so I have to practically stand on the pedal to get it to do anything before I ended up in my dad's bumper.

Then we got on the highway. I figured this otta be fun.

Remember my windows that wouldn't go down? Well, opening the door and holding it mostly closed fixed the heat problem. Now I had "a/c" in the car.

As we got home, I started to wonder to myself, "hmm...I wonder if I could get a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt while 'driving' " Believe me, that was the least of my worries.

Well, after pushing it into my driveway, I waited until that night for it to cool off before tearing into everything. I managed to blow out the ignition and the starting system. Ford had quoted me $95/hr to fix it, and that was before I figured out what was wrong. So, I ripped out my alarm and remote start since it was screwing with the ford PATS system, completely re-wired the steering column, put the alarm and remote start back in, and made it to where there wasn't a remote possibility of anything creating a jump spark again (I found that the ignition wire had jump sparked over to something else, and blown everything out) by sautering, heat shrink tubing, using good connectors, and tape wrapping everything. Then I went and replaced two of the giant fuses I blew in the engine compartment fuse panel.

5 1/2 hours later, the stang fired up on the first try at 1am in the morning. Alarm and remote start also worked on the first try. The next day, I spent an hour wrapping the rest of the wires and buttoning up the dash. All in all, I saved myself $600 in labor costs, a $95 diagnostic charge, who knows what in parts (the dash harness I inquired about is $500), all fixed for the price of $20 bucks in fuses and various new connectors and 6 1/2 hours of my time.

I think it was a pretty good weekend!

Thanks for sharing the entertaining moments in your life. After locking my keys in the car, I placed a spare key in my wallet. I haven't locked the the darned keys in the car since.
