For all of you trying to find a decent online place to get classic mustang parts, here's a rundown of my recent dealings with jonhsmustang.com.
Overall- 7... Will definitely do business with again.
Customer service- 10
Quality- 5
Price- 7
Ok, so after shopping around for weeks, I finally decided on John's mustang. It was about a week ago that I called to place an order. The guy on the other end, John, was polite and helpful as we went down my list of parts. There were several parts that I said I could get cheaper elsewhere, and John dropped his prices to within $5 of the competition. (I wouldn't be surprised if I paid for it in the shipping though).
After we had finished, John emailed me a copy of the invoice to look over. I called back a couple days later with some revisions to the invoice and placed the order... 2 fenders, 2 fender extensions, front and rear valences, front spoiler, and a master body bolt kit. I got an updated invoice sent to my email, but I had to call to get a tracking number. The tracking number wasn't much help anyways. The shipping company's website only displayed vague, coded descriptions of where my stuff was.
Anyways, I got a call from the delivery driver today saying that he was 10 minutes away. So, I went and stood by the road to meet him and get my parts. When I opened the box what did I find? I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the parts. I wasn't expecting perfect reproduction parts by any means. But what I got left something to be expected.
Now, I'm not bashing them here, I just want to be detailed enough to help others out.
EVERY body panel I got was dented and scratched. It wasn't terrible, but it looked like I got fenders that had been in a hail storm. The upper rear corners of both fenders were bent as if somebody at the warehouse had dropped them and they landed on the corners. It was in a way that I know it happened before all my parts were put together in one box to be shipped to me.
It wasn't so bad that I sent everything back. The main reason is that I already have some bodywork to do, so it won't be a big inconvenience to smooth out the fenders at the same time. The body panels took some "massaging" to get hem to fit right. One weird thing I came across was that the 3 holes that mount the fender to the valence did NOT match up on the passenger side. The holes were 1/2 inch farther apart on the fender that they were on the valence. I fount that bothering, seeing as I had gotten both parts from the same place. Also, my stock side marker lights don't fit in the fender without the use of power tools. The fender extensions are great, but the manufacturer forgot to put threads on the mounting studs. They came with nuts... The nuts just won't screw on. I had to glue them.
The master body bolt kit is great. It isn't concourse but it's close enough for me. Plus, its separated out in little baggies. One bag said "fenders". Another said "valance, FR". This was extremely helpful.
So, to summarize, the people at johnsmustang.com are extremely polite and helpfull. The pricing was not the best, but still compeditive. Pretty fast shipping. Be prepared to smoothe out and wrestle with any body panels. I will be ordering from them again.
Overall- 7... Will definitely do business with again.

These thought don't seem to go well together. Am I missing something here?
I have never ordered a fender but the repro front valance and stone shield I bought from Virginia Mustang a month or so ago arrived by UPS looking ... NEW. Why should anyone expect less?
I have to assume, Johnsmustang here in Houston, TX? They're not the friendliest aftermarket place on the Earth! I really don't like going there(10 miles from home). I'd rather buy from laurelmountain mustang (lou, jasen, or Kevin) and wait on an item to be shipped, they're less expensive and seem to try harder and have ok deals. I just wish they'd answer the phone by announcing their name! They all sound alike! I don't see how metal items don't get banged up during shipping, or prior too! they know you're probably not going to ship it back!
I have purchased from John's Mustang one time before and will never do it again. I gave them the part numbers right out of their catalog for my 66 Fastback. What I got was parts for a 69, parts for a 71, and parts for a 65, nothing for a 66 even with me giving them all the part numbers and having the salesman read them back to me. The parts for the 65 wouldn't have been bad since most 65-66 parts interchange. However, it was the latch and cover assembly for the fold down and they are different. The icing on the cake was that I ordered and was charged for concourse reproduction metal wipers. What I got was cheap plastic pieces of garbage that I could have bought at a local Autozone. When I called to tell them about the mix up they argued with me about what I actually received. They also told me that the metal wiper arms had been on back order for over three months and they didn't know when they would get some in. When I asked why I was charged for the concourse pieces and why the salesman didn't tell me about the situation, I just heard "sometimes it happens but at least we sent you some wiper arms" I will NEVER buy from them again or NEVER recommend them. I would say this is just my two cents worth but there are guys in my local club that have had similar experiences or worse with them and feel the same way as me. I was so disgusted with them I just sold the wrong parts to club members and used a much better supplier.

Everything that I ordered from VCM has been correct, beautiful and shipped on time. Mustangs Unlimited's stuff doesn't seem quite as nice but customer service is still a+. My experiences with CJ's, Laurel Mountain and some others have been OK -- but nothing seems to touch VCM in my book. My .02.

John's shouldn't be selling scratched and dented panels for full price. National Parts Depot puts those panels aside and places them in a clearance section in their store. You actually have to go to their store to buy them, but I've saved as much as half off on panels where I had a hard time finding any defect.
While it's a hit and miss deal finding what you can use, but at least they're not trying to unload defective parts at full price. The business practice of substituting inferior parts for something specific that you ordered and paid a premium for is totally unacceptable. Without notification or compensation makes it even worse.
I contacted John's Mustang about a part that I had a question about. I was told that they would call me right back. That was three years ago, I'm still waiting on that phone call.
Bought a part from Laurel Mountain and requested a catalog. Never received a catalog. They never received any more business from me.
I refuse to deal with anyone who doesn't appreciate my business. With the economy the way it is, some of these outfits are going to go under. Most of them will probably deserve it.
I've dealt with many dealers when I've owned newer Cobras and Lightnings but this is all new to me.
I've ordered from CJ's and Obsolete Ford so far and haven't been impressed with either. I've heard good things about National Parts Depot but I haven't ordered from them yet.
Personally I like cal-mustang. They sent me all the parts i needed within 4 days and the other two places i tried had them on backorder. The only thing i was mad about was the grille. It was very cheaply made and was dented and broken when they sent it, when i called to complain they credited me the 60 bucks and never even made me send it back
laurel mountain mustangs gets my business... usually next day shipping if i order early enough (i live in Pa) ... I can stop at CJ ponyparts on my way to work but i won't go there if i dont have to... I called them for a clutch fork for my 64 1/2 and it took them 15 minutes to take my address and credit card number... then they decided to tell me that they didnt have one in stock... why horse me around for that long when i told you what i needed in the first minute of the phone call...
so far LMM has treated me fair so thats where my money goes...
I tried to install my new upper control arm shafts from Laurel Mountain and they don't fit. The stock shafts have a 4 3/4" bolt spacing. Laurel Mountain sent shafts with a 4 5/8" bolt spacing. They said all of theirs are 4 5/8", too bad so sad. Every other resource says it's 4 3/4". I can return them but they won't refund my shipping costs.
John's is 5 miles from my office..........IF you know what your part number is and IF you are educated in Mustang parts...give it a shot. Otherwise, they are not helpful, not friendly and I've had to help 2 different customers while I was waiting for an hour for them to finish getting my parts.....LOL.
Mustangs Unlimited I like a LOT!! will buy from them again. I use to buy from NPD...but after spending several thousand dollars with them I received poor window cranks and the jerk that answered the phone said "you ordered them what do you want me to do about it"....well that 25.00 order ruined it for me.
