Default 1968 Mustang with a 289

so, I just got a 1968 289 with a 4 barrel carburetor on it. I'm a junior in high school and was wondering how to get a little more horse power out of it on a budget of about $4,000. Any ideas?

It depends on how much work you want to do. A cam would be a big help but its not just a bolt on. Get an intake, heads, headers, exhaust, and some type of electric ignition.

with 4K you can do a lot so do some research and decide how much work and what kind of power band you want.

yeah, I had 302 heads on my old 289 but when i put a new motor in it, for some reason, we didn't put them back on and now they're gone. i was thinking about putting 302 heads on it again. About much horse power would i gain of that? (average, I understand there's no sure-fire way to get it exactly right)

I think the 302 and 289 heads were the same. If you are talking about putting 1968 302 heads on a '68 289 then there would be no difference or increase in power. You could bolt on some 351 heads which should be better but you have to be careful on the year of the heads because some were the same as the 302 heads.

Horsepower or torque ?

For low RPM torque, get rid of the 4 bbl and go back to a 2 bbl

i have a 68 coupe as well. some cheap ways to add some easy hp: petronix electronic ignition, aluminum performance intake, headers, dual exhaust. good luck!
