Default 66 fastback, quarter skins?

Has anyone installed quarter skins on a fastback? If yes, how did it work out? The top half of the quater panel is fine and a quater skin would work fine i would think. Any help here? Thanks, Greg

Default 66 fastback quarter skins

first question how do you plan on bonding your skins to your old panel? are you going to weld them or bond them with a weld bond adhesive like fusor? ar eyou but joining them or are you going to flange new and old panels and do a lap joint?

I was going to over lap the skin on the old quarter, then cut them both, but I would cut both a few inches, then mig weld a spot, cut more then mig weld again. Keep doing this until both skin and quarter were cut off to make a butt fit. Then go back and finish mig welding with a wet rag going from one spot to another so i don't warp the metal. Has anyone done this?

i have doen quite a few skins and full quartrer replacements i wold ty to use as little mig as possible of you are doing a skin only. dry fit your skin over the old panel and trim the old panel longer and an inch or so, on the upper edge to the skin. invest in a flanging tool, and do a lap joint on them it will make your life a whole lot easier, and use a weld bond adhiesive form sem or fusor. its worth the intial investment. a tube is about 45 and the gun is about the same. so your looking at about 90 bucks or so to get it together but you wont have and distortion form heat and no grinding to do you just have to have both pieces clean bare steel and scuff it with like 36 grit and follow instructions with the adhiesive.then after its done, a few hours like 3-4 you can go back put a few spot tacks if you like but if you can plug weld it on the flange (drill some holes prior to using the fusor) it will take alot of grind time out. hope this helps

RedRyder, Thanks for the info. Sounds like a plan and I was going to get a flange tool anyhow along with some other body tools also. I need to weld in some other partd before i do the quarter skin job. Question for you? Should I have the doors on first to line up the seem? The doors do have some play to make them move some if needed. I was going to take mesurements and get the skin as close as the old quarter was before I remove it.
Thanks, Greg
