Default Tough question!

I replaced 5 of mine. Piece of cake! yeah right! my 68 coupe.
Depends on the severity for starters. How many pans are in need of replacement? How much experience you have in metal working? mig welding? I'd say it's kind of a brutal job myself! 0 = easy, 10= major difficulty. so, floor pans = 10.

Its really not all that hard, its just time consuming other than that its just a cut and weld scenario just be patient, measure 2 cut and weld once

I agree with DNE, it really depends on several factors like she mentioned but I'll add that it also depends on how you want to join the new pans to the remaining metal.

You could cut out the bulk and then overlap the new a 1/2" or so (lap joint) as it's easier but it will also show easier that the pans were replaced and could be a moisture trap if not sealed well.

The other way is to butt weld the new pans to the floor. Tougher to do but there won't be an overlap to trap moisture plus if down right could become almost impossible to tell the pans were replaced. The easiest way to do this is to cut out the bulk of the original panel then drop the new on top. Cut through both with a cut off wheel or saw but stop and tack the two together every few inches. This way the replacement panel will fit and not worry about lining up afterward. You're basically lining it up as you go.

I did a lap joint 11 years ago on my 68 with the right rear pan. The rest of the floor was surface rust I cleaned up and repainted. I'm very tempted to go back and replace both sides with full length floors so I will never have to worry about the rust coming back and to get rid of the lap joint that is visible under the car. I have alot more skill, tools and confidence now than I did back then.

I just finished replacing mine. I did double long pans and overlapped them but with a trick....I used a flange tool and the overlap is on the inside so that on the bottom once welded it looks like it was butt welded. The overlap is visible on the inside only. Grinding the welds and undercoating the bottom you cannot see that they were replaced.

It was much easier this way as they were a bit more forgiving on accuracy of the cut and it is quite a bit easier to weld this way. It is your car so depending on the end result you are looking for you can do any of the above ways and have a good, safe repair.

Default a learning experience

I wrote about this earlier, but if I had to RnR floor pans again, of course now I'd know what to do, and to do better and quicker! Of course this holds true for just about anything doesn't it! So, even though I dubbed this floor pan replacement as a 10 on the difficulty scale, doing again would maybe be 6 or 7. I've had to do everything alone, so you're having help and that should make it more enjoyable!

Take note in whether you're replacing an entire side or just quarters. I found it would have been much better to have replaced an entire side vs. just a quarter. of course then you have to remove the seat platform~ eh, not that big a deal. You may have long legs and want to move your platform back a bit, or leave it out all together and mount a BMW E36 leather seat! However then, the original carpet wouldn't fit right! lol

I think my least favorite was replacing a rear seat pan, you know, beneath the rear passenger's butt!

Honestly, I'd really rather never have to replace floor pans again. But I will say this~ sure looks nice when you're done and in knowing you won't have a Flintstonemobile anymore!
Good luck!
