Question Would this engine stand work?

im ready to pull my 289 out and i dont have a hoist or a stand to pull it and keep it up to work on it and i have been searching for prices and i came across this stand eBay Motors: MOTO FEET FORD SBF ENGINE STAND, CRADLE, DOLLY (item 390009931148 end time Apr-17-09 15:11:04 PDT)
and i was wondering can i attach this to the motor mounts and then jack the front in up and pull the engine from the bottom with out the use of a hoist and its already on a stand?? in theory it should work right??

I think you are asking for trouble - get a hoist. You can get a relatively cheap one at Harbour Freight.

I don't understand how you're going to pull the motor though without a hoist. How will you support the motor when you take the motor mounts out to get this stand under there?

You also have to raise the front of the car a good 5' to clear the lower radiator support to roll either the motor out or the body away. Add the height of the motor plus the stand, maybe a little less than 5 but it would still be quite high.

The last thing is a fixed stand like that will be difficult or impossible to work on the bottom end of the motor. A rotating engine stand is great for that. This stand is basically good for engine storage only.

EDIT: just thinking of this more you should just buy a regular engine stand and buy or rent a hoist. The motor won't just come out the bottom. The engine cross member, steering system and sway bar will be in the way. You would need to take the front of the car apart to do it that way. Out the top is easiest with these Mustangs. If this was a Chrysler product from this era out the bottom would be very possible as the motor, steering and suspension is all attached to the K member, just drop the K member and it all comes out in one shot.

No, that won't work. You can't drop the engine down through the frame rails in the older cars.

If you can't afford a hoist, go and rent one.

An engine stand that you can spin the motor on is a great investment and well worth the money because it makes the job a lot easier. I agree that you should rent or borrow a hoist. it will be a lot easier.

You should be able to find a friend with a hoist, offer pizza and beer and have some fun pulling the motor.

Gee Sam, if you're that tight for money, are you going to use used rings too? Don't mind me~ just being silly here. I bought a new engine hoist from Harborfreighttools and engine stand for less that 200.oo (of course there is S/h). After I'm done with it, i'll put in on craigslist and recoop some of my money. You may even check craigslist locally. However, you may be able to rent one from a local Rent it place. They're usually worn out, crappy, but get the job done.
Just curious, but how much money do you have to put into your motor? How fast can you afford to go? Get's really pricey! Having the block cleaned, cam bearings installed, and a mess of other unaccountables you hadn't counted on!

Everyone wants to go faster, keep up with the "other guys". Does it run now? is there something wrong with your motor? If it doesn't blow like a mosquito fogger, and runs ok, why not just enjoy it, put some nice wheels on it, dress it up a bit?

I wish you luck!

Understood Sam! In that case, you'll probably find many other things to replace. These older cars just seem to suck up the money, but gee I love 'em!
again~ take lots of photos!
