Default 4-speed Top Loader, Reverse?

I have a 1966 4-speed top loader, HEH-BW. Where is the reverse? Over to the left and up, or over and down? I was given a 4-speed shifter, (66?) and the knob has reverse over to the left and up.
Thanks, Greg

That's where my reverse is - all the way left (there is an extra detent) and toward the dash.

Hello. If you have the Ford shifter, it will be all the way to left and down, if it's a Hurst shifter, it will be all the way over to the left and up.

Thanks for the info everyone. Now you have me wondering, Did ford use Hurst shifters back in 66? The shift handle is a 66 Ford 4-speed with a good working T for reverse. The top loader, (HEH-BW) is in a GT car and has never been apart from the engine. Would ford have used a Hurst shifter on a GT car? As I mentioned before, this 4-speed handle with knob was givin to me from the guy who owned the GT car after I bought it from him. Do you think it came from this car? How can I tell what shift linkage is on this tranny?
Thanks, Greg

Hi again. Ford didn't put Hurst shifters in their cars in 66, but, people frequently swapped them out. You don't have to go into the transmission to do that. The reason that reverse is over and up on the Hurst shifter is because you have to flip the reverse shift lever on the side of the transmission around so that it's pointing down, instead of up, like Ford did it. With the shift lever pointing up, the Hurst reverse shifter rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission hits things under there and you can't shift into reverse.

Veronica, Thanks for the info. Another question. Can you de-code build sheets? I found mine wrapped in the wires behind the dash, but the mice got to it and when I opend it up it looks like a snow flake we all made out of paper when we were kids. Is there a web-site I could go to or a book that would show what all those letter/numbers mean? Part of the sheet is missing, but has the code there and no title to say what it is. This I do know, 66 fastback, 4-speed, candy apple red, built 10/23/65. Axle has a 6 and A in the same box, drive shaft has a M, (what's that?) Deluxe seat box has a 7, (what's that?) There's more that I don't know. Any help with a de-coder book?

Thanks, Greg

Hi again. There is no book that decodes the build sheets. At least, not that I know of. I have a bunch of that stuff sitting around in different places, though. If you could scan the build sheet, or remnants thereof, and send it to me, I'll see what I can figure out from it.
