Default AOD Rebuild Help

Hey,
I have a 92 2.3 liter with an AOD. I have done most work on engines including rebuilds. This trans is slipping. Is this a job for pro's or is rebuilding an AOD something I can buy a book and vid and try? I have most tolls and mics. Any one done this before?
Brian

I rebuilt my AOD for my 89 and it wasn't that difficult. You can get kits with all of the clutches, steels, filter, gaskets, and seals for good prices. While you're in there, it wouldn't hurt to toss in a shift kit.

There is a book out there for most non-latemodel automatic ford transmissions, it features the C4, C6, AOD, and some FWD automatics. That book had everything I needed to tear it apart and put it back together. It's available at most parts stores.

If you get a transgo shift kit, they include a VHS that takes you through it step by step.

It also wouldn't hurt to put in a tranny cooler and remote full-size filter while you are at it.

You will need to get some piston installation tools (about $90) to make it easier to get the piston apply seals into place and a tool to measure for the correct play in the second speed clutch. Other than that they are about twice as involved as rebuilding a C4 but doable for a mechanically inclined do-it-yourselfer.
The TransGo kit is the only kit I would recommend (and there are parts I don't like about it) and I would definitely recommend the high speed conversion that comes with it.
You have a great AOD to start with but get an A or A+ OD servo and piston for the rebuild and be sure to use at least the 14 member one way clutch - I prefer the mechanical diode replacement. You can buy an overhaul kit that includes the "power pack" kit - it allows the use of more clutches in some of the drums - well worth the extra money.
Add a cooler! 30000 pound towing weight is just right - you can never run too cool (as long as it gets to 120 F).
