I have a story, well more like a heart breaker, back when I was in high school I rode the bus home after school, it took the same route every day and we always passed by this tow company, I would often try to see if I could spot any cool looking cars or something. So one day while on the way, I spotted a white car. It was out there in the tow yard. It wasn't a pretty sight. All the tires were flat, the white paint was all chiped and cracked I noticed it had a red line going from panel to panel. I knew it was a Mustang. As I read in the mags and books, there were only two models that had that line. It was either a Boss or a Mach 1.
At that time I had my own Mustang, but it was a '66 with a six banger. I spent hours fixing it up but didn't quite know how to drive it as it was a manual
tranny. I waited until the weekend and told my mother about this car. After a lot of begging, she finally agreed to take me to the yard to take a look at it. I was so excited!! I knew if it were the Boss, it would have the 302, but if it were a Mach 1, it would come with the 351 or even the Jet! so when we got there I asked the counter lady who's car that was, she called someone in from the yard to come down. It was a tow truck driver. I asked him about the Mustang and if it was for sale. He said sure. Whenever the lien papers were cleared it was going to go on sale. I was one step closer to owning this massive beast.
As we were walking towwards the car to my amazement, it was a Mach 1. I asked the driver what year, he replied 1969, but it had flat tires, rust all over the place, the interior was still intact all the seats were cracked, carpet was there, no steering wheel, cob webs everywhere but it was a complete car, it had a bad ass hood with it's functional scoop. When he opened it, sure enough, the engine was still there. But by the looks of it, no one had started this car in a long looonng time It was just abandoned. The driver said it came from an old house and the new owner who bought the place wanted it out. I thought to myself, "boy this is gonna be a long project," it's going take lots of money, and of course time. So when I asked the driver how much, he said well you can have it for $2500. Ok, reasonable price. Then when I turned to my mother, her face expression was like.......well she was disgusted. Of course all I could see was a stack of gold bars, they just needed some polishing but she was looking at it like a giant turd on wheels. She said "no way Jose" as she knew how much parts for my '66 cost.
Well there you have it, I wonder who has that car now and what they have done to it, Sometimes when I pass by that tow yard I think to myself what if?
