Default '71-73 Convertible - what to look for when buying?

Hi - I'm new to the forum. I'm in the market for a '71-73 Mustang convertible, and would like to know what specific trouble areas to look for when inspecting one of these rag tops.

I'm familiar with Ford/Mercury vehicles and engines, and I do most of my own work. I've had my share of '69-'73 Fords, and I currently have a '69 Cougar and a '70 Eliminator.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Rick

Major Rust, in the cowl area, frame rails and any other structural area.

Rust is the main thing to look for, what is your budget? Convertibles and the northeast can be a bad combo. You may consider looking for a car in the South West.

Crawl under the car look for rust anywhere and every where. The cowl vent is a common rust spot on early mustangs. And around where the top folds down look for rust also. And the normal floor pan truck frame rails and shock towers.

Thanks for the responses. What's the best way to inspect the cowl vents if I can't take any parts off the car? From under the dash?

Only easy way i know is to pour water down it.if it leaks out inside the car its rusted out.The cowl vent has drain holes down where the fender and door met on both sides. The reason it rust out is dirt and leafs will block off the drains and holds water. And ford never painted inside the cowl just primer maybe some over spray. If the front parts of the floor pans are rusted out or been replaced its probably from a leaking cowl. But if you use most of the after market heat and ac units you can weld the cowl shut its easier then cutting it own to fix it.
