I would take the heads in and have them tested for cracks.

Check to see that you don't have the heater hose connected to a exhaust port on the intake manifold. Could be head gasket or head is broken

Anti freeze eats up engine bearings. I would remove the oil/water/milkshake ASAP and not drive it until the problem is found
Do a Radiator leak down check and compression check on the engine.
  • Probably blown head gasket,
  • Might be cracked/warped head,
  • Slight possibility cracked block

Pull the heads and look at them and the gaskets for breaks in the seal on the cylinders with low pressure. Might want to have a machine shop check over the heads for cracks and mill them.

We just replaced our head gaskets because it failed when the radiator seam broke and engine got hot briefly. Cheap #$^*$!@$ radiator.
The new aluminum 2 row is MUCH better (for the SAME price!). Car never gets more than 1/3 on temp gauge.

Possible head gasket leak.Might have to pull a head & check the gasket.

Hello wabarca2,
This is a tough question to answer depending on your mechanical ability and the availablity of tools.

There are several things to do if yo want to remove the heads.
1. - Take many pictures of the engine before starting.
2. - Get a good Mustang manual or a book like Chilton's.

3. - See if you have several tools like Rachets, sockets, breaker bars, torque wrench,
pliers, screwdrivers.
Drain radiator - Pull hoses off

There is no specific order to do some of this but one approach is
1. - Disconnect Battery
2. - Remove and label all hoses on the carb and intake Disconnect and use masking tape with notes
3. - Take more pictures
4. - Remove alternator and belt 2 or 3 bolts. Pull aside or disconnect the electrical wires and label.
5. - Remove Power Steering pump if equiped
6. - Remove spark plug wires but write down fire order (should be marked on intake manifold.
7. - I would not pull the distributor
8. - Disconnect the fuel line to the carb and cap it off.
9. - Remove bolts holding valve covers
10. - Remove valve covers and gaskets (Clean both surfaces) use new gaskets
11. - Disconnect gas pedal linkage - Take more picture
12. - Pull pvc hose if equiped
13. - Take intake manifold bolts out - (about10 of them)
14. - Gently but forcefully pry up intake manifold
15. - Disconnect bolts holding exhaust manifolds (eight per side) the

The exhaust should be able to be pulled away from head.
16. - Unbolt head - These bolts are located under the valve covers

I am sure I left out a few detaiils but this a rough idea.

The job can be done if you take your time and don't force things.

This can be a fun project and you will be able to do it with a bit of research.

As a thought - - do you have a vocational school near that could help?

Also if you do try yourself - - be sure to clean all gasket surfaces and don't let pieces fall into the motor.
If you pull the intake you may want to consider putting in lifters.

You will need a head-set of gaskets. Check your local library for repair manuals. This can be done.

Again this is just a rough idea of what is ahead.....Jim

Hello wabarca2
Great idea. Research well but don't be too afraid.
I also suggest using little plastic baggies that you label for nuts bolts etc.
For example when you remove the alternator, keep the bolts nuts and spacers etc
in a seperate baggie and label it alternator.

Also tape hoses, lines wires etc. and label them with a sharpie.

I am not sure of your mechanical ability but we all have to start somewhere.
Often when you start doing things it becomes easier as you do it.
Remember to not force things. If you just take your time the job can be done.
Many people could pull the heads in a few hours but they are experienced.
Just take your time and enjoy the work.
Tackle one part at a time. For example remove the alternator, then the power streering pump if equipped.

Post back.........Jim

I've heard of just the intake gaskets leaking/failure causing this too as the coolant leaks into the lifter valley and mixes with the oil.

Even if you lack mechanical ability but are willing to learn and have some common sense (clean surfaces when assembling, keeping the parts in order) then working on these cars isn't bad with how basic they are. We ALL had to learn at one time.

Default head bolts

I would not use the old head bolts on the heads after new head gasket. After time these bolts stretch a very little and could throw off re=torque,Buy new ones be safe,do job one time.I never use them twice, been doing it along time, chevys ford etc. Joe
