The cowl vent its the holes where the wipers and windshield are if the floor is wet or rusted out its probably a rusted out cowl. With a vinyl top you need to look at it for any rips or tears and any bumps they feel funny.Reason being once the vinyl splits it lets water in and holds it many cars with a vinyl top get rust holes from that in the roof.Take a magnet off your fridge and try sticking it anywhere on the lower edges of the car and around the rear wheels. If it don't stick that means thicker filler that's hiding something you won't like.

you might want to get under it & check the frame make sure it's all solid & check engine compartment & trunk also. It can all be fixed but nice to know what your getting before you buy it.

Default Welcome!!

OMG, there's too much to list! There are so many many things to look for, but then things you wouldn't think to look for unless you knew what you were looking for! I feel that after working on my '67 for the past 1.5 years, I know I would know what to look for! I think you should do like everyone here has said, and then you should drive the car, see how it shifts, listen for "bad" noises, check the brakes, have they been modified, upgraded, and if so, upgraded by whom!? How much are you willing to spend? Then take 8500 cash, lay it on the table, feel it, count it, do you want to part with it, and be ready to sink more into it? Hope this helps, but hope it doesn't discourge you, cause these cars are so cool! OH, and welcome to the site !!

Check the lower rear quarters for rust
Check the fronts of the outside door panels
Check the floor pans -- under and on top
Check the flange around the gas tank in the trunk
Look underneath the battery -- almost sure to find rust there.
Check numbers on engine and transmission to determine whether or not they are original (partial serial # is on 68 engines)
Vin plate in upper right dash, inside door panel (with trim information)
Have compression checked in engine
How does it run
Does it overheat
check coolant and oil
look at frame rails
is it square
think about a professional evaluation and appraisal

No matter how good it is -- figure you're going to spend some $$ to make things like you want them

And there's more.

Don't make the mistake that I did and get all caught up on the shiny stuff on top - put a pair of coveralls on and get under the car and look at the frame rails, shock towers up front, floor panel - if there is a bunch of tar sprayed underneath it is probably hiding rust issues - look closely. Take it from me it is very expensive fixing the rust issues underneath
