Default 1967 Mustang coupe restoration

Hey, my family and I just decided that it was about time to start fixing up the 67 mustang that has been sitting for the past 15 years, and I'm not really sure where to start with the process. Any ideas? Or any places you guys know of where I can buy some cheap kits? Anything helps, thanks

Hello 67 Resto,
Sounds like a great idea. I am working on a 70Mach 1 that has been in my garage for 20+ years. Please learn from my stupid mistakes.

1. - Forget the gas and the gas tank. They must go.. But not at first. I tried sevral things but ended up replacing the tank after it messed up a new carb.
2. - The carb will need rebuild/replace
3. - The fuel pump will probably have to go as well.
4. - What I finally did was replace the tank but kept it capped for now.
5. - I am running a small lawn mower tank to just get the car back running
6. - Turn the motor by hand before trying much. The valves will probably be stuck
You may have to pull valve covers, soak valves with mystery oil.
Spray a bit of mystery oil in each cylinder before moving engine. If you get the motor running, flush radiator and fill. Check for leaks or poor circulation

So I think you get the idea. Baby the motor and soak it down wiht mystery oil. Change the oil. Turn motor over by hand. If it is hard to turn....pull valve covers and see if all the valves are free and going up and down. Rebuild or replace the carb. I have not done a complete tune-up yet as I want to get the car running and if you change everything all at once it is harder to determine what is wrong. Example...bad point setting, incorrect wiring on plugs etc.

Next I tackled the brakes. Chances are you have drum brakes. I would replace the wheel cylinders and all hardware. Have the drums turned. Check the condition of the brake lines. It is almost impossible to tell how the rubber lines are that connect to the cylinders. May replace them. - The brakes are very important.

Check tires. They may look OK but in 15 years they will have dry rot. You will need to replace the tires.

For the interior - junk yards, e-bay etc.etc.

I don't mean to discourage you but I am in the process of doing almost the same things so I only mean to offer insight as to my mistakes.
IO tried to drain tank, put in new gas, add additives etc etc. The end result was I started the car and then gummed up my new carb, fuel pump. Don't make my mistake.

I would take the time to pull valve covers, soak mystery oil and then try to turn the motor using a pull bar and socket on the balancer bolt. Of course you will need to replace things like belts and hoses.

Just a few ideas. Go for it!!!!If you have some time it can be a real blast.......Jim
P.S. - If you want more details or ideas post back or e-mail me.......Jim

Well I'm pretty lucky because a few years back we had quite a bit of work done on the engine and it runs pretty well. I've always tried to start it every once in a while even when we weren't paying any attention to it, and I've never had a problem getting it to start. I'm going to replace the headers and I'll probably soak it in mystery oil, but the engine isn't the main concern right now. We were thinking about breaks and suspension first, and probably also wiring while we have the engine out. Any suggestions on how to deal with rust holes in the interior (other than welding of course)?.

Hey 67Resto, good luck with your project. I'm going to watch your thread 'cause I'm also just starting a project (a paid one; not a DIY) to restore a '67 coupe. Mine almost certainly doesn't run right now (sitting in storage for 3 years), but last I saw it it was rust-free and 9/10 interior.

The shop specifically mentioned brakes, suspension, and fuel system as places that will deteriorate in storage (they haven't seen the car yet; inspection is June 4th). Hard, dry rubber bits and rust, I presume.

The experts here recommended that I buy a book specific to mustang restoration (as opposed to a general technical manual ala Haynes). I didn't get any specific recommendations, so I went with "Mustang Restoration Handbook" by Don Taylor ($15 at Amazon). Even though I'm not doing the work myself, it'll probably help me understand what needs to be done and why. There was another book at Amazon (forget the title) that was a bit lower-rated but apparently more detailed in terms of "how to" instructions and pictures.
Might be better for a DIY job.

Good luck, and post pictures! My thread is here.

I'm restoring a driveable '67 and went in this order:
#1 Suspension
#2 Brakes
#3 Drivetrain - moved up since my flywheel chipped and I could no longer start it.
#4 Replace windshield, new seal for rear glass. While those are out I'll have a new headliner installed and 3 pt. seatbelt mounts installed.
#5 Body work/paint.
#6 Interior and new door, etc. seals
I'm doing interior last since the car is perfectly driveable with old interior and until I get the windshield changed/ sealed a new carpet, dash, etc. will be ruined by the first rain that lets water drip in.

Get a large notebook and make notes and a TO DO list for each area of the car - Electrical / Drivetrain/ Interior / etc. Also write down shop references like suggested painters, welders, so you have all your info. in 1 place, chasing post it notes is a nightmare.

Look at the car closely and decide what you want for the car in the end - close to stock restore, restomod, daily driver, etc. plan your work and work your plan. That will help you decide between replacing suspension parts with better parts like roller perches or upgrading manual drum brakes to PDB, etc. I found that I would spend almost as much putting it back with poorer brake perf. as upgrading to disc since I was going to replace all the drums/bearings, etc.
Jon

im doin a 67 coupe right now. i did the supension/brakes. then wiring. then i went to my mechanic to do the engine and transmission. from there i went to body work and paint. then i went to glass. im into the interior at this point but hey good luck and have fun. and just remember that the frustration that you have with it is good because it means you want it that much. and when its done you have a great story to tell and a cool car to drive
