Default 1965 Mustang horn is worn out. How do I fix it?

I recently read an article in one of the mustang magazines about how to fix your old worn out Mustang horn but I can't locate it any longer. Does anyone have any tips on repairing an old worn out horn short of buying a replacement?

Hello. I've never heard of a cost-effective way to actually repair the horns themselves on these cars, but, normally, if the horn works poorly, but does try to honk, it's a wiring problem, not the horn. It's a very simple system. I think that the first thing that I would do is make sure that the horn had a good clean ground and run power to it straight from the battery. If that honks like crazy, then it's a wiring problem.

Not sure if you were trying to find that article, but it's a past mustang monthly one (two or three issues back). I remember reading the tech letters people write in with in the issue following that article about fixing the old horns, and some guy was extremely happy that he'd read the article and now his horns work after 30 years of not working, and they are the original ones.

You might try googling it, or call mustang monthly and get them to send you a replacement issue of the one that had it in there, as it was only a couple months ago. Unfortunately, I believe my subscription started a month after that issue, as I just had the tech write in articles in mine so I can't tell you much more. I do remember the guy had written in talking something about using a magnet on it (something inside apparently gets stuck) and tapping on it. Wish I had that article and I'd send you the info.

Make sure it is the horn! puy a wire from battery positive to the terminal on the horn and another wire from the battery negative to the metal mounting bracket, (wear gloves as the horn can produce enough voltage to give you a mild shock) If the horn doesn't work this way you can tune the adjusting screw to see if you can get it to sound better but if that doesn't work it is better to replace it than to try to open the horn up and try to fix the coil and contacts inside.
