Which Steering Wheel for 1966 Mustang coupe

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a new steering wheel for my coupe. I would like a woodgrain wheel, but not the plastic ones. I have heard some bad things about the Grant wheels and looking for some recommendations. I think I would also like to get a little bit smaller than the stock size.

I got a grant steering wheel and haven't had too much trouble. I had to put some silicone on the inside of the horn button to keep it from falling off once every couple weeks and i have had to tighten the big nut that holds the wheel on the column once. If you are looking for a cheap steering wheel that looks nice then a grant is good but if you want a really nice wheel and have some money buy something else. I got a 15 inch wheel (stock was 17) for my 65 with manual steering and i like the size a lot better. A 13 inch wheel may be to small for manual steering but i don't know. If you have power steering either size should work good.

I heard that they have fallen off before, that is why I am hesitant to buy a grant. What model of grant wheel do you have? I have been searching, and most of them dont have horns.

sucks they dont have a chrome horn button with the mustang emblem for that wheel. it does look nice!

The one i have is listed on the grant website as a classic model wood wheel, i think. It has a horn button in the center that is chrome with the mustang emblem. The reason the wheels fall of is because the big nut that holds them on comes loose. You could put something on the threads to lock the nut on to fix that problem or just check it every so often. You should be able to tell when it starts to get loose. Here is a pic the wheel i got.

STAY AWAY FROM GRANT!!! My Grant wood wheel came off while I was doing 70MPH. I replaced it with a reproduction woodgrain rim-blo steering wheel. At all the local shows, I have talked to 13 owners who didn't know about the Grant problem and when they checked all their wheels had come loose. They are looking at getting reproduction steering wheels now. You could get one of the Shelby wood wheels. They are real wood, and they have been made by the same company since the 60s.

The reproduction shelby wheels would be the best to get but you can use a grant if you check it every once in a while. They do come loose but as long as you check it and keep it tight it would be ok. just maybe a pain to have to check it every so often. I know it sounds like i'm defending grant but thats not what i am trying to do. I think 66sprint200 is the one that said "you can fix it the cheap way or the right way". Grant is the cheap way. It will work but you are better off spending more money (if you have it) and getting something else.

I went for the deluxe steering wheel, it's a little pricey, but so is this project.

Well thanks for all the advise guys! I ended up finding a new old stock of the LeCarra Mark 3 Supreme like the car from gone in 60 Secs. It is a french wheel with the 18 rivets.

I think I made the right choice, it was alitte pricey, but I cant start being cheap now, I already have over 2O K in the car
