Default 5 Speed or AOD transmission for 1966 Mustang 421 stroker 351

well im restoring my 66 mustang. i pulled the 289 in favor of a 421 stroker 351. gonna be going around 500hp. now for a built t5 with all the mounts, cables, clutch and trans ill be looking at around 3700.for a built aod with all the mounts,2500 stall, and trans it will be around 3000. that is with a manual valve body so i will be able to shift.remind
you these aint reuilt these are brand new. when i restore a car i dont half a$$ it.

With the limited space for tire width I like the AOD better because in my opinion you will be able to get it going with less traction breaks. I have an AOD behind my 410 and with the widest drag radials that fit the car (275 40 17) I can't launch the car, but I can flash the converter (I think that's what I'm doing anyway ) and it jumps right up in the RPMs coming out of the hole. The drive line shocks of the stick in higher HP applications will easily overpower the rear in a 66 mustang.

You can also setup the AOD with a 2.85 first which will let you decrease the rear numerically a bit more to get more economy out of the over drive gear when cruising on the highway.

I like the 5 speed, but you could always go with an AOD with a paddle shift

I've always been a fan of manual shifts.

The AOD with constant pressure manual shift is going to be less money and less maintenance than the 5 speed. Where are you getting your AOD? I hope its Broader Performance.

im thinkin about the aod. if im building it to be fast and run consistant times you cant beat a auto.as the saying goes even the best cant outshift a automatic.i been looking into this place that sells a complete conversion kit for around 3000 it comes with a aod good to 750hp cause i want to get at least 500 to 600hp out of the car. check this out

Check this site out for your AOD:
Broader Performance Home Page
If you want a trouble free AOD this is the ONLY place I would go - if I didn't build them myself.

Their transmissions are junk. They might be someone worth dealing with if you are local, but if you can't go and pound on their counter when their transmission leaves you stranded on the side of the road...again....then I would caution against dealing with them
