Default 1966 Mustang-Grant Steering Wheel Problems

After installing my new Grant steering wheel, that thing is really starting to piss me off. I dont have power steering anymore and i feel like i put so much strain on the wheel that it pops somehow. Im not even sure if its the wheel itself but something makes weird noises. I feel like its the wood poping from the strain. The horn cap probably has the crappiest design i think i have ever seen. Its supposed to clip on and sure, i can drive around with it being on for like a full 2 minutes then it pops off in my lap. I somehow didn't notice it pop off before and with my luck it went right behind the brake pedal. Noticed it real quick as you could imagine. If i turn with the cap on it will honk because of the crap foam insulators that keep the contacts off of eachother. I dont like looking at a steering wheel with wires everywhere. Just plain ugly. I feel like i missed a part when i installed the thing. Is the cap just supposed to clip on or be fastened somehow? Thanks for the help.

i had the exact same problem with it, i ended up bypassing the horn, removing the contact insulators, and the cap. and just using the steering wheel.

There have been quite a few threads on here about the crappy Grant wood wheel. I got rid of mine and I encourage everyone else to do so as well. They work themselves loose, then the horn starts acting up and eventually they come off all together. I replaced it with a reproduction of the factory woodgrain wheel. I got it for like $150 through ebay and it was the complete wheel. I haven't had a problem with it yet. It may be more expensive, but it fixes the problem if you get a reproduction wheel. Do a forum search for Grant wood wheel and you will see, there are quite a few complaints.

The horn button/cap is just supposed to push on and stay but it won't. If you put a little silicone around the edge where it goes on and then push the horn button on and let it dry you shouldn't have anymore problems with it.

Ya, but then you have to try and get all that silicone off if you ever need to remove the steering wheel!

Mine's not a wood steering wheel, but it's just plain crappy! I plan on getting a different one as soon as possible.

Like I said, I got my reproduction woodgrain wheel for about $150 on ebay. I haven't had any problems with it. It hasn't come loose, the center cap doesn't come off, and it looks really good. You could probably find a standard wheel, or an original wheel in good condition. In fact, there is someone on the pittsburgh craigslist selling 2 steering wheels for $10 each.

The way I solved the problem with the horn button was to wrap the edge of the part that the buttons connects to with 2 layers of tape. Any kind of tape will do, I used electricl tape. This made the ring a few millimeters larger, and when I forced the cap onto that ring it stayed put. This worked on both my 66 and 69 Mustangs, so I think it should work for you.

Your first issue with the horn button is because at the end of the steering rod is a little nipple. This nipple is what the steering wheel puller pushes against. You have to take a hacksaw and cut this nipple off flush with the threads. It's only about a 1/4". Then the horn button will pop on and stay on. This has to be done to all Mustangs 67-70. I know I have the same wheel. As for your other issues, it is your wood popping. Those wheels were not made to work with cars without power steering. If you use them without power steering the wood will start to separate at the joints and crack around the rivets.

65 couple, i have the wood wheel (966), some joints are filled with wood putty which just cracks and falls out, the horn button would fall off so i put a little super glue on it, i put some added foam pads on the horn contact part, couldn't get the wheel adapter it came with to fit but i had an old one that did fit. Good thing i have power steering or the wheel would be worse off. I got this wheel cuz it was $100 compared to $300 for the original reproduction wood wheel.
