Does he sell those tops? I have seen them on e-bay every once in a while.

No... he has come across them before but not very often as you can imagine. This one will actually require a lot of rust repair I can only speculate what the rest of the car looked like.

Anyways we started tearing into the car today. We didn't remove the coupe top yet but we freed up the back end. it was slower than we expected but thats probably because our only tools were a 4" cutting wheel and a flat head screw driver used as a chisel. Tomorrow we will cut the front windshield off and a begin test fitting the fastback. If all goes well hopefully we will have it spot welded by tomorrow night.

Here are some pictures of how we braced the car and what not...

there was a point in the day when I would have given my left arm for a sawzall, but being just a collage student this is a real budget build so I can only use what I got.

Finished putting the roof on today... I got to say it was a lot easier then I anticipated. Literally the only tools we used were a 4" grinder, a large hammer, flat head screw driver (used as a chisel), and a mig welder.

Also I believe my mustang is a 1964.5. I looked up the codes on the vin number it was made in Michigan and it has the U engine code which I was told is unique to 64.5 models.

I'm telling you it really was. I don't really know how to weld much but my friend did. Neither of us had any experience cutting that big of piece off though. My friend had done some prefab work before but I think if you can weld a little and you are half way good at solving puzzles this is not as hard as some people make it seem. One weekend is all it took. The top fits like it was made for the car (weird huh... ha ha). Really though once the coupe parts were removed the fastback just fell into place almost exactly! I think I will have to get one of those custom plates and make it say FAKEBACK . That's what my boss calls it. I think it is fitting, but I could not be more pleased with the way it turned out.

To anyone thinking about doing this I would say go for it. As long as you can find an old roof. I don't know about just buying the reproduction sheets I hear that they are missy a lot of the internal structure. But if you got an old roof this project it just about as easy as replacing a quarter panel.

Just thought I might throw this out there. I am not trying to sell anything but I was looking for parts on ebay and if anyone lives close to Waterford, Michigan and you think you might want to convert your coupe to a fastback check out this link:

1965 1966 MUSTANG FASTBACK ROOF SHELBY 2+2 K CODE GT:eBay Motors (item 200349197214 end time Jul-03-09 21:58:17 PDT)

hes asking about twice what I paid for mine.
