I have a friend selling a completely rebuilt 429 cobra jet engine for 800, but he offered it to me for 200, im not even sure if the darn thing would fit in my '67 ! I have my 67's 302 pulled right now as I'm repairing the shock towers, so i figured might as well!

Would it even fit?

With a plasma cutter and a sharp axe you can make anything fit.

In 67 they expanded the engine compartment to fit BIG blocks. It will fit just fine. I think you will have to either change the tranny or at least the bell housing too.

it came with the tranny, a C6. but he has an FMX he says would bolt right up too, i figured i'd just take the C6 since that's what came with it.

They came with a 390 as and option for $232.00. But Carroll Shelby had 427's in his. If you don't want it engine let me know.

Its a tight fit but it will fit you just need the right motor mounts headers and remove your front cross member for oil pan room or mod the cross member.The fe and 385 are about the same size.While you got the engine out brace up the shock towers you'll need it with a big block.Read this http://home.flash.net/~sanco/mustang.htm look at the weld in tower reinforecement that little brace does wonders and its cheap to do.

Make sure that C6 is for the FE& not a small block C6,otherwise it won'y work

A 428 will fit fine.........make sure you get the FE motor mounts, don't worry about the cross member,it's fine.you'll also need the transmission cross member.My 67 is getting a FE 390/C6.

He said the C6 came with the engine, which I guess means it's already been bolted to it before.

I think small block C6's are like hens teeth.

The 429 and 460 were never in the 67 but the SOHC 427 was and it is wider than the 385 family of engines - I say go for it.
There will be a bit of fabrication and a learning curve with the installation but it will work.
If you have to get rid of the "belly bar" then fabricate a new one to hold the bottom of the front sub-frame together. You will need it with all the torque your new engine will produce. On that note be sure to run the tower braces and a "Monte-Carlo" bar to help stabilize the front sheet metal. Sub-frame connectors are also a good add-on to make the "frame" more stable.

I note you said 429 cobra jet, as such, it will fit but you need to do some major modifications to your engine compartment. It is WIDER than the FE big blocks (390, 428, and 427) that were put in your car as an option by the factory or Shelby. You need to notch the shock towers at a minimum, most remove them altogether and go with a coil over front suspension. You can get by with just the notching though.

A 429 (non-boss) bolts into the 67/8 cars (I know because we had a 68 coupe that we put 69 429 into). Unless this mythical 429 CJ has the boss heads, it has the same size heads as all the other 429s out there and can be installed in the car without removing or notching the shock towers. That isn't to say it isn't tight...it is tight...but it does go in.
