Question 1965 Mustang Turn Signals

Hi,

I'm new to the Forum and want to say that I appreciate all the great advice I can read off the threads.

My son and me are just finishing up a '65 Fastback we've been working on for 2 years. We have a turn signal issue. It has the original '65 wiring harness and is in decent shape.

Both right and left turn signals blink too fast.

Also (related or not) I noticed the when I push in the headlight switch the both turn singal lights flash on for just an instant. This only happens when you turn the headlights off, not when you pull out the switch to turn them on. I already replaced the headlight switch.

Thank you!! Looking forward to some troubleshooting tips from the experts.

Welcome to the site. Check for a loose ground wire on the back of the switch or somewhere close by.

Do you mean the lights on the front of the car flash when you push in the light? If so, that should be normal. If you pull the knob out one notch the turn signals come on because they are also the parking lights (todays daytime running lights).

As for flashing too fast, that sounds like you have installed the wrong flasher can or one of the dual filament bulbs is dead. When the turn signals are on do both lights flash on that side flash? The "dual filament" bulbs have 2 filaments in, one to act as a standard light, and one to act as a turn signal flasher. It is possible for one filament to die and the other to still be okay. The flasher can is a little metal can that should be located near the drivers side fresh air vent. There are 2 cans so be careful. The one that is mounted near the ashtray in the center of the dash is the 4 way/emergency flasher and it is larger.

The turn signal lights flash on the instrument panel for an instant when you push the headlight switch in.

I replaced the the flasher by the driver side vent.

Both the front and rear turn signal lights flash so the bulbs should be good I guess. The bulbs are new.

I'll have to check grounding. I know there is one ground wire from the instrument panel to the frame. I know have that one grounded well. Are there any others?

Thanks.

If the 65 is like my 66, then there are 2 grounds up on the front. They are/should be near where the headlamp harness goes through the inner fenders to the headlamps and parking lamps. Are you sure that you put the right flasher can on?

Here, check out this link. http://midlife66.com/wiring/wiring.html
He has a 65 wiring diagram that includes the parking lamps and everything.
