When talking about sanding, what does that entail? Just take a piece of mild grit sandpaper and go over the whole thing?

don't bother sanding an engine, it has a rough surface that will never smooth out

I Painted my whole engine without using any primer with some high temp engine paint, just make sure you got all the grease off of the part by either cleaning it in gasoline or brake cleaner, works like a charm. haven't had any problems with paint flaking off.
