hello new to afm, just bought a 66 coupe, when in drive it switches between 1st & 2nd but never goes into 3rd. Have been told it could be the vacum modulator. Is this possably true or something more severe. How do you find out the type of tranny the car has.

Just want to add that the upper dot that you would normally associate with Drive (in a newer car) selects 2nd and 3rd. So you would only see/feel as it shifts that one time.

Not sure where I put my owner's manual for safe keeping but it had something to do with driving in limited traction conditions.

If you put your shifter in the first notch after NEUTRAL, it will start out in 2nd gear and then shift to 3rd as you speed up. If you put the shifter in the second notch after NEUTRAL, (DRIVE) it will start out in 1st gear, shift to 2nd and 3rd as you increase speed. This is a characteristic of early C4's.

On '67 and later C4's, they changed the valve body, so that first notch after NEUTRAL is Drive.
