Default 1968 Mustang Paint Code Question

I have a 1968 convertible that is currently Acapulco Blue. I am considering returning to original color during my complete restoration. The paint code shows the color as Z. My research doesn't show a Z color in 1968 for the mustang. Any help in figuring out the original color. ar3204@yahoo.com

I don't know. Your best bet would be to look under the carpet, in the trunk and under the door panels & dashpad to see if you can find the original paint. Then check this website to see if it matches any of them. 1968 Mustang Body Styles - MustangAttitude.com Data Explorer Or you could order the basic Marti Report. That would tell you what colour it was.

Yup, no Z in the 68 model year but do you have a real early car, low sequential number in the VIN? There is a Z in the 67 model year, Sauterne Gold, that may have carried over slightly into the 68 model year. The other possibility is it being a special order, someone saw a 67 in that color and wanted thier 68 that color, but even though it was a special color in 68 it got the Z on the color code and not left blank since it was a stock color already used by Ford, and only weeks/months before.

From what I've seen, Sauterne is lighter than the Sunlit Gold color that was offered in 68.

Is your DSO number larger than 2 digits, evidence of a special order. Not knowing what plant built your car would you have a buck tag, it would list the paint on there.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Just pop out the rear seat bottom and look for the original color.

Usually when the color is changed, they don't bother painting the body color under the seat.

You don't like Acapulco Blue? It looks sharp on your car. I really like that color.
