Default Decode number from Balancer?

Well in my quest for more info about my motor can anyone tell me if the number stamped on the balancer will tell me what year motor I have? Here is what I pulled off of it. D2OE 6316 A2A When I went on some different sites I found one that showed the D2OE part as a 69-76 302 block. Is this right? I know it is a 302 from the heads but looking to get as much info as possible. I also am assuming that this balancer was not just thrown on this motor.

Also, If it is a 69-76 b302 block where should the timing pointer be? Currently there is no pointer on the motor so the location and side of the motor (pass or drivers) would be great. Thanks in advance!!

D2OE - 6316 - A2A

D - 1970's
2 - 1972
O - Fairlane (all) and Torino 1967-1976
E - Engine component

6316 - Engine base assembly.

A2A - Engineering version.

I got this info from here:

Decoding Ford casting part numbers

Jack your car up and lay underneath and act like you are preparing to remove the starter. The block number will be just above the starter. You may even have to remove your starter to see it if it is too big covering the number. Your balancer is from a 72 Fairlane or Torino.

The timing pointer will be bolted onto the timing cover at the 10 o'clock position. There should be a small bolt hole in the timing cover and a bolt 2" below that you will use to attach it. Most suppliers have the pointer and it come with the small screw to attach it.

The 'O' does not mean it was ONLY used on a Fairlane or Torino. It was DESIGNED for those cars but likely used on anything with a small block V8. Its 1972 or later. The number on the block won't tell you much about a balancer that may well have been replaced.

'O' was Fairlane for 62-68, Torino from 69-76, 77-79 LTDII, etc. The small block V8 in a Mustang was designed to sell Fairlanes and first sold in 1962 so in the beginning it had mostly Fairlane numbers on the basic parts.

Default thank you

OK

Thanks for the info but my water pump has the outlet on the pass side so putting a timing tab at the 10:00 position is impossible to do. It looks like it should be on the drivers side as there are two holes that look like they would do the trick at about 2 oclock unless im missing something??

Thanks
Mark

I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking. You need a 10 o'clock top dead center pointer, but it is installed where you are looking at the 2 o'clock position. I got ahead of myself and was quoting the pointer and not the position.
