Rot and rust are the biggest worries with the older mustangs. Floor pans and cowl are good areas to check well for rust and be certain to check the frame rails as well as the floor support rails. Weep holes clog up on these over the years and trap water causing them to obviously rust out.Always good to check the underside of doors and the inside of the trunk also.As well around the front and back windshield gaskets. Lot's more to look at besides this but this would be a good indication of major body and frame damage. Good luck on your search

They are pretty solid cars, check for rust and shy away from anything major, other than that you can buy every part for the car to rebuild it and you have some great suppliers like SEMO mustang out your way.

Another thing that comes to mind are the window regulators. Check to make sure you can't push the window down.

Needs to have minor rust, no frame collision damage, and make sure the vin is right and matches up to the rest of the car.

Look inside the front wheels well under the lower control arm. There is a piece about 4" wide and 8" long on top of the frame rail that connects to the shock tower. It collects all of the water, dirt, salt (if you live in the northern states). Both of mine were rusted though at the shock tower side. The patch pieces are relatively cheap. The problem is that over time, the torque of the engine will start to twist the towers. I had to rent a porta-power to move mine back into place so that we could patch them.

agreed, do yourself a favor and have a reputable restoration shop check it out if you don't feel comfortable trusting the owner, that is if you have one nearby. other than that, do your best to check it over thoroughly, because there can be hidden rust spots that you may not see.

good luck with the search.

follow up on the advice here FIRST....check the car out. Even novice inspection with notes from folks here will get you a lot of information. Once you just can't wait to buy it....THEN hire a professional. They charge for this service..be sure you are committed to the car of choice...also be WILLING to walk away. Good luck!
