Default advice on mustang engines

Hey everyone, I am new to this forum site. I have a 1965 Mustang with a stock 289 V8 in it. I recently acquired a 85' 5.0/302 (casting number E5AE) roller block with all the engine components along with it for what i believe was a cheap price. I have read on other sites that roller block are good since they produce less friction (having roller tappets) therefore being more efficient, and that you can put a more aggressive cam. However, I had a concern regarding the cylinder heads that came with it. They are of casting numbers E5AE. I have thought about having this engine rebuilt in the future but wonder if it would be wise to look into other cylinder heads (money might be an issue so I'm not too sure if i could afford aluminum heads) to go along with the roller block. Would there be a better set of stock ford heads that I could use? If so, what other things could I add to such heads (i.e. roller rockers, stiffer springs etc) I know other components such as cams play a roll in what my goal is with this engine but this was the first question on my mind. I apologize if all this sounds very rookie when it comes to cars, as I do not claim very good knowledge in the field of cars and engines. Any suggestions or advise would be highly appreciated. Thank you

If price gets in the way? Go for the GT40p heads. More affordable and will get you some extra hp.

we're pretty much doing the same thing to my '65, and yes the roller motors do prduce much less friction and are able to take a bigger cam. as far as the cylinder heads go, i went with some '69 hi-performance 302 cylinder heads off of ebay that were in amazing shape. brand new basically. they were casted as DO0E. but the GT40p's would work great too. Also, I would go with Scorpion roller rockers. We got some and everyone that we have been talking to about them say that they never break. ever. hopefully this tidbit of information helped, good luck man

Is it the H.O. engine? If you want to go with a more aggressive cam I would go with a solid roller cam.

ummm im not too sure if it is a H.O engine, i know its a roller block from the triple X markings on the block. Specs that I have read on line identify the cylinder head casting number that i have (E5AE) as being from an High Output engine, dont know id that is correct though. So, I dn't know if thats what identifies the engine as being H.O.

as far as the heads go, if you really wanted to do something different you could runt the 289 heads on the HO block. they will raise your compression a bit depending on what 289 heads you have. this should also help you gain a little HP.

what transmission are you running ? I have a couple of top loaders I would like to sell... just a thought
