Default 1968 Mustang 289 rear end problem

I recently purchased a 1968 coupe. I recently avoided a major accident and in the process slid sideways into a curb ( drivers rear tire ) pretty hard. The back wheel wabbles ( Bent rim ) Got a new rim and still have the wabble, I cannot get the rear axle off of the car. I removed the drum, removed the 4 axle bolts, and to the best of my knowledge the rear axles do not have a clip holding them in. Does anybody have any help for me. Thank you, Paul

It may be stuck and will need an axle puller. Before renting or buying one there's something else you can try. Try flipping the drum around and putting it on loosely, just starting the lug nuts, that way the drum will slide back and forth on the studs. Now grab the drum and use it as you would a slide hammer. This may be just enough force to free the bearing and axle seal from the end of the tube. Don't worry about the studs, they should be replaced with that hard of a hit was concentrated on that wheel.

Can you turn the axle by hand and see where it's wobbling?

If Jay's trick doesn't work you can just rent an axle puller as he stated, it looks like a big dent puller and most parts stores rent them with a deposit and return the full deposit when you bring it back so it's free. You may need new axles as you could have bent it, new bearings would be in order at a min. and I'd do both sides as they're both 40+yrs. old. take the axles to a shop or tire place usually costs <$50 to have them pressed off, new one pressed on. Axle bearings/seals will run ~$50 at the parts store.

Here's a pic from when I did mine, one side slid out, other needed the puller:

I jacked the car up and started it and put it in gear and the axle wabbled. I will try the reverse drum technique first before going to the parts store, and doing both sides is probably a good idea, If you are doing one why not the other. Thanks for the replies. Paul
