Default Identify it as a 260 or 289?

I was reading about a guy that had a D Code 64 1/2 Coupe which indicated a 289-4V was originally in the car. He said it now has a 260-2V, and it also has the 260 decal & fender badges.

My question is how do you identify a 260? If someone were to install one in a later 289 alternator car, how would you tell it's a 260? Is 260 cast into the intake or heads? Would pulling the starter and getting the block casting numbers be the only way to tell if it's a 260?

The casting numbers would define it.

The block casting numbers for a '64 260 would be C4OE-6015-B or E. A '64 289 would have the same number except it would be either a C or F as the last letter.
