Default 1967 Mustang Starter won't disengage

I just replaced my starter solenoid on my 67 Mustang. The car started right up, but the starter wouldn't disengage - even when I turned it off and took out the key. It kept running and the starter kept going. I had to pull the coil wire to get it to turn off. Any ideas?

Recheck you wire connections and replace the solenoid again. Was the old one bad? You can always take the starter with solenoid attached to autozone or any other parts store and have them test it. Hopefully it does it to them also and not your ignition switch.

Hello. It sounds as if you have the two small wires on the front of the solenoid reversed. That would make the car do that. If you have the Scott Drake starter solenoid, that would also make the car do that, even if it's wired correctly more often than not. The Borg/Warner part number for the starter solenoid is S63.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried switching the wires. That wasn't it, so I returned the solenoid. The next one I tried didn't repeat the same problem of not disengaging, but it didn't work either. It's giving me that clicking sound went I try to start the car. So I tried another solenoid - same thing. Possibly my battery is getting weak so I'm charging it over night and will try again tomorrow. Thanks again.

Starter solenoids are cheap and sometimes broken right out of the box. One time a put a brand new solenoid on my car and started the engine up cold with fast idle, I heard loud metal noises, I turned the key off and the engine kept running, I had to quickly jump out of the car and pull the coil wire off to kill the engine, then I heard the starter was still turning, I had quickly disconnect the battery cable to stop the starter. The solenoid was sticking on! I put on another new solenoid and it fixed the problem. I just hope the teeth on the ring gear were not damaged by the starter being stuck on.

next time try getting your starter and or soleniod from a more reputable source such as Napa or a starter and alternator shop. they usually last longer than those coming from Auto Zone or Advanced Auto parts.
there is a reason why they have the warranties that they do on electrical parts, they usually do not last.
