Default Engine Identification

I am new to this forum. I am restoring a 1965 Mustang GT fastback and I just pulled the engine. The engine code stamped on the block above the starter is "7J5" C80E 6015 A. I openned the valve covers and stamped on the driver side haed is 289 and the number 66, on the passenger side the head is stamped 289 and 65 I pulled the intake manifold and stamped in the Valley is 302. Any advise? This probably not the original engine. Is this typical? Thanks

Sounds to me like you have a 68 302 block. the timestamp suggests It was cast in October of 67. Im going through the same thing mine is a 65 289 in my 68 "C" code car. hope this helps.

its a 45 year old car, its not gonna be stock, unless u bought it from a dude who bought new, and never sold it. mines a t code, it had all v8 parts on it, a 302 like urs, and rust problems. welcome to our world of imperfections. fast backs are nice cars, do u really wanna go to the whole thing of making it boring stock? are u gonna sell it? if u wanna enjoy a car, y not keep it and make it the way u like it most? i like a shiny engine bay, with no room, flashy paint, and a loud system, and it has to be fast, whats the point of a slow fighter plane? i guess im just saying stop worrying of the origin of ur 302, and more about, how u gonna mod it to be more fuel efficient, reliable, and more comfortable to drive. but what do i know, im just a guy with a mustang.

That is a 302 block cast in Cleveland on 5 September 1967. They didn't use the letter I in the casting date codes. Interestingly, this is a block from which the factory built both 302s and earlier some '67 289s when they ran short of 289 blocks. The date code says it was for a '68 car though so it was likely a 302 from the factory.

There was a 289-only C8 block but its last letter would have been a 'B'. Its mostly not the original engine for your car although one of the heads might be.

Thanks for the clarification. I will most likely re-build the engine as is.

turfman, an engine swap with dferre13 would have been a good deal if only you lived close to each other.

Default 66 engine block code

can any of you guys help me decipher the engine block code on my 1966 Mustang GT? It is D10E-6015-AA there is a no. 29 on the side adjacent to this engine code and below it is the following 1J13.

Interested to know if it is a 289 or a 302 and what year. When I bought the car I was told the engine came out of a 1971 Torino and it was a 302, but since then several people have told me it is a 289. Engine runs good - just curious. Thanks

Hello. The 289 was phased out in the 68 model year. What you have is a 302. The date on the block is septeber 13th, 1971, so, it was probably either a 72 Torino, or the 71 blew up it's motor and that's a warranty block.

When I bought the car I was told it had a 1971 Torino 302, however, at a recent car show I was told the engine was a 289 because it had 3 bolts at the damper.
