Default question about engine clearance in a 1967-1968 Mustang

my friend recently totaled his 08 bullitt, and im closing the deal on a 68 fastback thats in need of some TLC.

my question is...will a 3-valve 4.6 fit in a 68 doghouse? ive seen some terminator engine swaps, but that requires a cowl hood to clear the bulky eaton s/c, as well as some fender work to clear the larger 4-valve heads. the 3 valve 4.6 (05-10) seems smaller both in intake height, and the width of the heads/headers. will it fit?

thanks for any info

Its been done many times before. Just dont know if its worth it. Lots of electronical crap to fit everywhere. If a 428 can fit in a 68, so can a 4.6. Good luck with the build

in my mind, an EFI'ed 408 stroker with an S-trim and NX fogger would be adequate, but im thinking about driveability. road trips, idling in traffic, various weather conditions, ect... and it needs to be just as easy to drive as it is fun to drive

my goal is 475rwhp, and 20+mpg...the 3-valve 4.6 can accomplish that easily. (edelbrock e-force with 7lb. boost kit; D&D 6 speed; and FRPP 3.73's)

not to mention, 4-wheel abs dics and traction control

You still gotta notch or remove the shock towers for a mod motor to fit.And the wiring and changing your fuel tank its real fun.Btw you can't use the abs or traction control with out using the newer mustangs spindles and rear end which is a bigger pain then a mod motor.

you should not have a problem stuffing a mod in there, the '67 & '68's were built to house big blocks. I would do some research on the total width of the mod and compare it to the total width of the 390-428's, and measure the distance between the shock towers. if I get a chance, I will measure the distance on my '67 coupe and post another reply. It will be the same on the '68 you are looking at as mine was a factory 390 car, so it will tell you what kind of room you are looking at for clearance.

The sohc mod motor is about a 1 wider then a 385 which is one tight fit on the 67-70 cars.20mpg and 475hp won't happen with out a blower or turbo.I would build a turbo 5.0 stroker with a aod or t5 it would get 20mpg if you stay off the boost. And it would bolt right in real easy.

the edelbrock e-force is a supercharger. and its alot more efficient than most roots style superchargers. air temperatures are much. its a roots s/c, but fits in almost as much space as the 4.6's intake manifold. 7lbs of boost, CAI and 42lb injectors. ive seen newer mustangs with 500+hp reel in 20mpg with responsible drivers

the 5.0 crossed my mind. i have a 306 with vortech s-trim, building a 347 stroker, and have 2 other 5.0's laying around waiting to be rebuilt. i want to do something different. terminator sawps and 5.4 swaps have been performed, but ive yet to see this happen. and IF i go with the automatic, the new 5-speed 5R55S from ford could be built to be just as nice. TCI interanls, stall convertor, and a TCI paddle shifter/ratchet shifter kit

If i'm doing that much work i would use a ls6 or ls7 over any mod motor. Its cheaper it will fit better but still have to make the mounts wiring and fuel might get fun.I'm not a mod motor fan after working as a tech on them. There is problems like blow by and blowing plugs out of the head, leaking plastic intakes egr system is junk. And to get any real power from one takes a blower but over 600hp they fall flat on there face.I know a guy on the other mustang forum that has the lightning 5.4 in a eleanor.
